Charles Burchard (born January 1, 1810 – died April 1, 1879) was an American politician. He played a part in shaping early Wisconsin, serving in important government roles.

Burchard was born in Granby, Massachusetts. In 1829, he married Martha Pitcher. Later, he moved to western New York. There, he became involved with the United States Liberty Party. This party was focused on ending slavery. In 1844, he supported Henry Clay in his campaign to become president.

Moving to Wisconsin

In 1845, Charles Burchard moved to Waukesha, Wisconsin. At that time, Waukesha was known as Prairieville and was part of the Wisconsin Territory. Wisconsin was not yet a state.

Helping to Form Wisconsin

Burchard was chosen to be part of the first Wisconsin Constitutional Convention in 1846. A constitutional convention is a meeting where people write or change the rules for how a government will work. He was a member of the Whig Party during this time. The Whigs were a major political party in the United States.

Life in Wisconsin Towns

In 1854, Burchard moved to Mayville, Wisconsin. Later that same year, he moved to Beaver Dam, Wisconsin. He continued his public service in these new towns.

Public Service and the Civil War

Charles Burchard served in the Wisconsin State Assembly in 1856. The State Assembly is a part of the state's law-making body. It is similar to the House of Representatives at the national level. He also served on the Dodge County, Wisconsin Board of Supervisors. This board helps manage local government for the county.

Role During the Civil War

During the American Civil War, Burchard helped his country. He was a member of the enrollment board. This board helped organize and sign up soldiers for the Union Army. He held the rank of major during this time.

Later Life

Charles Burchard became ill in February 1879. He passed away in April of that year in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin. He was the father of another politician, Samuel D. Burchard.
