Charles "Gadget" Jones (born April 3, 1957) is an American retired professional basketball player. He was known for his amazing ability to block shots during games. While he wasn't a big scorer, his defense was a huge help to his teams.
Playing in the NBA
Charles Jones was a tall player, standing 6 feet 9 inches. He played as a forward and center. He was chosen by the Phoenix Suns in the 1979 NBA draft. He started playing in the NBA four years later.
Jones played for 15 seasons with five different teams. These teams included the Philadelphia 76ers, Chicago Bulls, Washington Bullets, Detroit Pistons, and Houston Rockets.
Before the NBA
Before joining the NBA, Jones played in a league called the Continental Basketball Association (CBA). He played for teams like the Maine Lumberjacks, Bay State Bombardiers, and Tampa Bay Thrillers. In the CBA, he was recognized for his strong defense. He was named to the All-CBA Second Team in 1984. He also made the All-Defensive First Team twice (1983, 1984) and the All-Defensive Second Team once (1985).
NBA Highlights
One of Charles Jones's biggest achievements was winning an NBA Championship with the Houston Rockets in 1995. He played in many of their playoff games that year.
He played his last NBA game on May 3, 1998. At 41 years old, he was one of the oldest players to ever play in the NBA. Throughout his career, he averaged about 2.5 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 1.6 blocks per game.
Jones had some memorable games. On January 8, 1986, he scored 17 points against the Phoenix Suns. This was the team that first drafted him. Four years later, he blocked a career-high 10 shots in a game against the Orlando Magic.
Family Life
Charles Jones comes from a family of basketball players. His brothers, Caldwell, Wil, and Major Jones, also played basketball. They all went to Albany State University and played in the NBA, just like Charles.
