How the Musical Began
This musical is based on Roald Dahl's beloved 1964 children's book, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. The idea for the musical started to come to life around 2010. The creators wanted to bring Willy Wonka's magical world to the stage.
It was officially announced in 2012 that the show would open in London in May 2013. The story for the musical was written by David Greig. The music was composed by Marc Shaiman, who also wrote the song lyrics with Scott Wittman.
The famous director Sam Mendes led the first production. The show also featured amazing dance moves by Peter Darling. The sets and lighting were designed to make Wonka's factory truly spectacular. The musical added some new twists, like the Great Glass Elevator, to make the story fresh for the stage.
Shows Around the World
London's West End (2013–2017)
The musical first opened in London's West End on June 25, 2013, at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane. Before its official opening, there were some preview shows. The show was so popular that its run was extended many times! By October 2013, over 300,000 tickets had been sold.
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory even set a record in the West End for the most money earned in one week. The show closed on January 7, 2017, after a successful run.
Over its time in London, different actors played the role of Willy Wonka, including Alex Jennings and Jonathan Slinger.
Broadway (2017–2018)
A new version of the musical opened on Broadway in New York City in April 2017. This production had a new director, Jack O'Brien, and fresh dance moves by Josh Bergasse. The sets were also updated to create a new look for the factory.
This Broadway show included popular songs from the 1971 Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory film, like "The Candy Man" and "Pure Imagination". Christian Borle played Willy Wonka in this production. Charlie Bucket was played by young actors like Jake Ryan Flynn, Ryan Foust, and Ryan Sell.
One interesting change was that the child characters of Augustus Gloop, Violet Beauregarde, Veruca Salt, and Mike Teavee were played by adult actors. Only Charlie was still played by a child. The Broadway show closed in January 2018.
US National Tours (2018–2022)
The musical began its first national tour across the United States on September 21, 2018. This tour was similar to the Broadway version. It used cool LED screens to create the factory's magical look. Noah Weisberg played Willy Wonka, and young actors like Henry Boshart, Collin Jeffery, and Rueby Wood shared the role of Charlie.
A second US National Tour started in January 2020. This tour also featured updated sets, using a large LED screen. The tour paused for a while in March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It started up again in October 2021 and finished its run in June 2022.
Australian Tour (2019–2021)
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory also had a tour in Australia. It opened in Sydney on January 11, 2019. This production was similar to the US tour. Paul Slade Smith played Willy Wonka, and Lucy Maunder played Mrs. Bucket. Several young actors shared the role of Charlie.
After playing in Sydney, the show moved to Melbourne in August 2019. It was planned to go to Brisbane in March 2020 but was delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic. The show eventually opened in Brisbane in September 2021 and finished its Australian tour in Perth in November 2021.
UK and Ireland Tour (2022–2024)
A new production of the musical started its tour in the United Kingdom and Ireland in November 2022. This version was made to be more like the original London West End show. It brought back some songs that were not in the Broadway version. Gareth Snook played Willy Wonka in this tour.
A special feature of this tour was that the role of Charlie could be played by both boys and girls. The tour finished its run on February 4, 2024.
International Productions
Beyond the US, UK, and Australia, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory has been performed in many other countries. The first non-English show opened in Milan, Italy, in November 2019. It also had productions in Norway, Brazil, and Paris, France. Many of these shows faced delays or closures due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Other countries that have hosted the musical include Denmark, Belgium (Flemish production), and the Netherlands. A Spanish production ran in Madrid and then toured Spain. A Japanese production opened in Tokyo in October 2023. A Swedish production opened in September 2024.
