Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Charlotte Small (September 1, 1785 – May 4, 1857) was a remarkable Métis woman. She is famous for joining her husband, David Thompson, on his many journeys. David Thompson was a well-known surveyor, map maker, and explorer.

Early Life

Charlotte Small was born on September 1, 1785. Her father was Patrick Small, a partner in the North West Company. Her mother was a Cree woman. Charlotte's family was deeply involved in the fur trade. Her brother, Patrick Small Jr., worked as a clerk for the North West Company. Her sister, Nancy Small, was married to another North West Company partner.

Marriage and Expeditions

Charlotte Small married David Thompson on June 10, 1799. They were married in Île-à-la-Crosse, Saskatchewan. Charlotte was only 13 years old when they wed. Together, they had 13 children.

Charlotte often traveled with David on his long expeditions. These journeys took them across vast areas, from the Rockies all the way to Quebec. She traveled much farther with Thompson than the famous American explorers Lewis and Clark.

David Thompson wrote in his journal, "Today wed Charlotte Small." He truly honored this promise for his entire life. During that time, many European explorers would leave their Indigenous wives and children. They would then start new families in Canada or Europe. But David Thompson stayed loyal to Charlotte. He remained by her side and cared for her and their 13 children.

The couple was married for 58 years. David Thompson passed away in 1857. Charlotte Small died just a few months later, on May 4, 1857. They are buried together at Mount Royal Cemetery in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Their long and faithful marriage is a special part of their story.
