Charrat was a small town, also known as a municipality, located in the Martigny area of the Valais region in Switzerland. It was a special place with its own local government. However, on January 1, 2021, Charrat joined with the nearby town of Martigny. This means Charrat is now part of Martigny.

Charrat's Location and Land Use

Charrat covered an area of about 7.6 square kilometers (about 2.9 square miles). A big part of this land, almost half (45%), was used for farming. Forests covered another large section, about 40%. The remaining land was used for buildings and roads (12%) or was unproductive (2.9%).

The town was situated on the left side of the Rhone river. It included the smaller villages of Vison and Les Chênes. There was also a developed area around the local train station.

Charrat's Coat of Arms

The official coat of arms for Charrat had a special design. It showed a green jagged bar on a gold background. Above this, there was a black lynx walking, with silver claws. At the very top, on a blue section, there was a silver oak branch with gold acorns, placed between two gold five-pointed stars. This design represented the town's history and nature.

In 2019, Charrat had a population of 1,913 people. Many people moved to Charrat, and the population grew by about 23% between 2000 and 2010. Most of this growth was from people moving in, and a smaller part was from new births.

Most people in Charrat (about 90%) spoke French as their main language in 2000. Some also spoke Portuguese (2.8%) or Italian (2.1%). A few people spoke German.

In 2008, there were slightly more men (52.1%) than women (47.9%) living in Charrat. About 45.5% of the people living in Charrat in 2000 were born there. Another 29% were born in the same region of Valais. About 16% of the population was born outside of Switzerland.
