What is the History of Chediston?
Chediston has a long history! It was even mentioned in the famous Domesday Book, which was a big survey of England completed in 1086. Back then, it was known by names like Cedestan and Sedestane. People think the village's name comes from Saint Cedd, meaning "Cedd's town."
Another interesting idea is that the name comes from a large, special stone called a "glacial erratic stone." This stone can still be seen at a place called Rockstone in Chediston. It's thought that Saint Cedd might have preached from this very stone, making it "Cedd's stone."
Long ago, the village was managed by a group of monks called the Augustinian Order. They were based in Pentney, Norfolk, and also looked after four other nearby villages.
What is the Parish Church Like?
Chediston has a beautiful old church named after St Mary. Most of the church you see today was built a very long time ago, between the 13th and 15th centuries. That's over 500 years ago! You can still find parts of the church that are even older, from the Norman times. Later, in the Victorian era, some parts of the church were fixed up, including many of its stained-glass windows.
What is Chediston Green?
Chediston Green is another small part of the village, located about half a mile north of the church. It's a "dispersed settlement," which means the houses are spread out rather than being close together. There used to be a local pub here called The Duke of Wellington, but it's now closed and has been turned into a private home.
How is Chediston Governed?
Chediston shares a local council with two nearby villages: Linstead Magna and Linstead Parva. This council helps make decisions and manage things for all three villages together.
Who are Some Famous People from Chediston?
One notable person from Chediston was Walter Plumer. He was a Member of Parliament, which means he was elected to represent the area of Aldeburgh in the government.
