All Saints' Church, Chelsworth

Chelsworth is a small village in Suffolk, England. It's located on the B1115 road, about 10 miles from both Sudbury and Stowmarket. It's part of the Babergh area. The wider parish also includes a tiny settlement called Chelsworth Common.

The village sits on the north bank of the River Brett. The whole village is a special 'conservation area' because it has many old and important buildings. Long ago, the Saxons called this place Ceorleswyrthe. It was written down as Cerleswrda in the Domesday Book in 1086. Sometimes, it was also known as Cheilesworth.

A Look Back in Time

People have lived in Chelsworth for over 1,000 years! We know this because there are old papers from 962. These papers show that King Edgar gave the village to Queen Æthelflæd.

An old church was in the village as early as 926. A church was also mentioned in the Domesday Book in 1086.

All Saints' Church

The church you see today, called All Saints', is mostly from the 14th and 15th centuries. It's covered in cement. What's interesting is that you enter the church through someone's front garden! Many old churches used to be like this.

Important Buildings

The land and buildings of Chelsworth once belonged to powerful families. These included the Howards and the De Veres. In 1737, Robert Pocklington bought the property. He then built Chelsworth House. This house is about 330 yards south of the village bridge.

There's a narrow, hump-backed bridge over the river to the south. Part of this bridge is very old, dating back to 1754.

Remembering People

A small war memorial in the church remembers Charles Peck. He was 19 years old when he died in September 1917 during the First World War. The church also remembers George Stracey Smyth (1767–1823). He was an important leader, serving as the second Lieutenant-Governor of New Brunswick.

Chelsworth Today

The Peacock Inn is a very old pub in the middle of the village. It has been around for over 400 years! Until 1976, it was also the village shop.

One of the most famous events in Chelsworth is the 'Chelsworth Open Gardens Day'. This special day has been held for nearly 50 years. It happens on the last Sunday in June. On this day, many people open their beautiful gardens for visitors to explore.
