The Chicora Meteorite
One of the most interesting events in Chicora's history happened on June 24, 1938. A large meteorite fell from space near the town. This space rock is now known as the "Chicora Meteor".
What Happened to the Meteor?
The Chicora Meteor was huge, weighing about 450 tons (408,233 kg). It exploded high in the sky, about 12 miles (19 km) above Earth. This explosion was so powerful that people first thought it was an explosion at a nearby gunpowder factory! Investigators later said its power was similar to a huge explosion that happened in Halifax in 1917. They even said, "If it had landed on Pittsburgh there would have been few survivors."
Finding Pieces of the Meteor
After the explosion, only two small pieces of the meteorite were found at first. One weighed 242 grams and the other 61 grams. These pieces were found a few miles away from where the main part of the meteor was expected to land. The main part has never been found. Two more small pieces were found in 1940.
There are many stories about the Chicora Meteor. Some say a cow was hit and hurt by a falling stone. Other stories even say the cow was killed!
What is the Meteor Made Of?
The Chicora Meteor is a type of space rock called an olivine-hypersthene chondrite. This means it's made of certain minerals. The pieces that were found are now kept in important museums. You can see them at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History and the Smithsonian Institution.
