Chinook has an interesting past, especially for a small place. It was very important in the early days of Pacific County.
Early Beginnings
In 1853, Chinook was chosen as the location for the very first court in Pacific County. This shows how important it was back then. Later, in 1870, the first salmon cannery in the county was built here. This was a big deal because salmon fishing was a huge industry.
Salmon and Railroads
Chinook was once a very rich town because of all the salmon caught nearby. For a long time, it was hard to get to Chinook by road. A bridge was finally built across the Chinook River in 1891, connecting it to the town of Ilwaco.
Later, a special narrow-gauge railroad was built. It ran from Megler all the way to Ilwaco, passing right through the main street of Chinook. This railroad helped people and goods move around. However, the railroad was taken apart in 1931.
