William "Chip" Banks is a former American professional football player. He was a talented linebacker in the National Football League (NFL). Born on September 18, 1959, he played college football for the USC Trojans. Chip Banks was chosen for the Pro Bowl four times while playing for the Cleveland Browns. He was also named an All-Pro player in 1983. Later in his career, he played for the San Diego Chargers and the Indianapolis Colts.

Early Life and College Football
Chip Banks grew up in Augusta, Georgia. He went to Lucy Craft Laney High School there. After high school, he played college football at the University of Southern California (USC). He was a standout player for the USC Trojans and finished his college career in 1981.
Playing in the NFL
Chip Banks began his professional football journey when the Cleveland Browns picked him. He was the third player chosen overall in the 1982 NFL draft. This was a big achievement!
Cleveland Browns Star
In his first year, 1982, Chip Banks was named the NFL Rookie of the Year Award. This award goes to the best new player in the league. He quickly became a key player for the Browns. He was selected for the Pro Bowl four times during his years with Cleveland. These Pro Bowl selections happened in 1982, 1983, 1985, and 1986.
Moving to Other Teams
In 1987, Chip Banks was traded to the San Diego Chargers. After playing one season there, he did not play during the 1988 season. He then joined the Indianapolis Colts in 1989. He played for the Colts for four seasons. Chip Banks retired from professional football after the 1992 season. Throughout his career, he made 46 sacks and 9 interceptions.
