History of Chipping Norton
Aboriginal Culture in Chipping Norton
The land around Chipping Norton Lake has a rich history. Two main Aboriginal groups traditionally lived here. The Tharawal people lived on the southern side of the Georges River. The Darug people lived to the north and west of the river. These groups were the first caretakers of this land.
Early European Settlement
In the 1800s and early 1900s, Chipping Norton was mostly farmland. It got its name from an old English village. A man named William Alexander Long named it. He was born in Sydney in 1839. Long studied law in England and lived in Chipping Norton in Oxfordshire.
He later bought a lot of land here. His home was also called 'Chipping Norton'. He had a horse farm on his property. Many strong young horses were raised there. William Long passed away in 1915. In 1919, the government bought his land. They divided it into smaller farms. These farms were given to soldiers returning from the First World War.
Another important early settler was Thomas Moore. He was given land along the waterfront. This land is now part of a park. 'The Homestead' building in the park was built in the 1880s. A Post Office opened in Chipping Norton in 1920. It closed down in 1974.
Over time, farming became less common. The rich soil and sand were dug up for mining. After 20 years of mining, the riverbanks were damaged. They had dangerous pits and eroded areas. In 1977, the Chipping Norton Lakes Authority was created. Their job was to fix the area. They turned it into beautiful parkland for everyone to enjoy.
