Chowilla is a special place in South Australia, located on the northern side of the Murray River. It's about 250 kilometers (155 miles) north-east of Adelaide, the capital city, and 40 kilometers (25 miles) north-east of the town of Renmark. The eastern edge of Chowilla touches the border with New South Wales.
Chowilla was officially named on April 26, 2013. Its name comes from a long-used local name for the area.
About Chowilla
The land in Chowilla is mainly used for important protected areas. These are the Chowilla Game Reserve and the Chowilla Regional Reserve. These reserves have covered the entire area of Chowilla since it was established in 2013.
Important Historic Sites
There are three historic sites within Chowilla that are listed on the South Australian Heritage Register. These are places that are important to the history of the area.
- Lunatic Bridge: This bridge is near Lake Littra. You can also see old posts from the New South Wales-South Australia telegraph line nearby.
- Littra House: This historic house is also located near Lake Littra.
- Todd's Obelisk: This monument is found close to the New South Wales border.
Population and Location
According to the 2016 Australian census, which happened in August 2016, Chowilla had a population of zero people. This means no one lives there permanently.
Chowilla is part of a larger area. It is located within the federal Division of Barker and the state electoral district of Chaffey. It's also part of the Pastoral Unincorporated Area of South Australia and the state's Murray and Mallee region.
