About Chris Brown's Life
Early Years and High School Baseball
Chris Brown was born in Jackson, Mississippi. He grew up in Los Angeles, California, and went to Crenshaw High School. While there, he played baseball with another future baseball star, Darryl Strawberry. Their high school team from 1979 was even featured in a book called The Ticket Out: Darryl Strawberry and the Boys of Crenshaw.
After high school, the San Francisco Giants picked Chris in the second round of the 1979 amateur draft. This meant he was chosen to play for their team.
Playing in Major League Baseball
Time with the San Francisco Giants
Chris Brown worked his way up through the Giants' minor league teams. He made his first appearance in the major leagues in 1984. In 1985, which was his first full season, he played really well. He hit for a batting average of .261, hit 16 home runs, and had 61 runs batted in (RBIs). He was even named to the All-Rookie team and finished fourth in the voting for the Rookie of the Year award in the National League.
In 1986, Chris had an amazing first half of the season, hitting close to .350. Because of his great play, he was chosen to be an All-Star for the National League team.
Later in 1986, Chris started having pain in his shoulder. Doctors found a serious problem, and he had surgery that winter. The next season, his playing wasn't as strong. In July 1987, the Giants traded him to the San Diego Padres.
Playing for the Padres and Tigers
After joining the San Diego Padres, Chris's performance continued to decline. He finished the 1987 season with a .237 batting average. In 1988, his average dropped to .235. He was then traded to the Detroit Tigers.
Chris Brown played his last major league game in 1989. He was only 28 years old when he left professional baseball. During his career, he played in 449 games. He had a career batting average of .269, hit 38 home runs, and had 184 RBIs. He also scored 164 runs and had 21 stolen bases.
Life After Baseball
After his baseball career, Chris Brown lived in Houston, Texas, with his wife, Lisa, and their two children.
In 2004, Chris worked in Iraq. He drove large trucks to deliver fuel. He faced dangerous situations during this time. By 2006, he had returned to the United States.
