Christopher John Alandy-Dy Tiu (born July 15, 1985) is a famous Filipino who used to play professional basketball. He was a talented player for the Ateneo Blue Eagles in college. With them, he won a championship in the UAAP in 2008.
After college, he played his whole professional career for the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters. This team is part of the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA). He even helped them win the Commissioner's Cup in 2016. Chris Tiu also played for the Philippine national basketball team. He was the team captain for the squad that played in the 2011 FIBA Asia Championship. Besides basketball, he is also a TV host, a model, a businessman, and has been involved in politics. He currently hosts the TV show iBilib on GMA.

Chris Tiu's Early Life and Education
Chris Tiu is the second oldest of five children. His parents are Jerry and Lianne Tiu. He has two brothers, Christian and Charles, and two sisters, Cheryl and Cristine. His father is a president of Tagaytay Highlands Clubs. He also owns several other companies. Chris's sister, Cheryl, is a lifestyle journalist. His brother, Charles, is a basketball coach for the Benilde Blazers. Chris Tiu also has Chinese family roots from his great-grandparents.
Chris went to Xavier School in San Juan City, Philippines, for elementary and high school. He then studied at Ateneo de Manila University in Quezon City, Philippines. There, he earned a degree in management engineering. He also studied Chinese.
Playing Basketball as an Amateur
Chris Tiu played junior basketball for the Xavier School Golden Stallions. He was part of a team that won the Metro Manila Tiong Lian Basketball Association Championship three times in a row from 2001 to 2003. His teammates at Xavier included Joseph Yeo and TY Tang. In 2019, his old school honored him with an alumni award.
Chris Tiu's College Basketball Career
Chris Tiu played college basketball for the Ateneo Blue Eagles. He almost joined DLSU, where his Xavier teammates Joseph Yeo and TY Tang went. In 2003, he and his Ateneo teammates reached the UAAP Finals. However, they lost to the FEU Tamaraws.
Chris took a break from playing in the 2005-2006 season. He was studying abroad at Lille Catholic University. He came back to Ateneo the next season. In 2006, his team made it to the Finals again. But they lost to the UST Growling Tigers in three games.
In 2008, Chris and the Blue Eagles finally won the championship. They ended a six-year drought by beating their rivals, the DLSU Green Archers. That team was led by JVee Casio and Rico Maierhofer. Chris was also chosen for the UAAP Mythical Team twice. His coach in college was Norman Black. In 2008, Chris Tiu was named Favorite Athlete at the first Nickelodeon Philippines Kids' Choice Awards.
Chris Tiu's Professional Basketball Career
Playing for Rain or Shine Elasto Painters (2012–2018)
On August 3, 2012, Chris Tiu decided to join the PBA Rookie Draft. He had spent several years focusing on the Smart Gilas national team. On August 19, the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters picked him as the 7th player overall in the first round.
In 2013, he won the three-point shootout during the 2013 All-Star Weekend. He won one championship with the Elasto Painters in 2016. This was the Commissioner's Cup. Chris Tiu announced his retirement from basketball in January 2019. In his very last game, he scored a career-high 30 points.
Playing for the National Team
After his college career, Chris Tiu joined the national team. He was the team captain for the new Smart Gilas Pilipinas national team from 2008 to 2012. His teammates included JVee Casio, Marcus Douthit, Japeth Aguilar, Chris Lutz, Marcio Lassiter, and Mark Barroca. Their coach was Rajko Toroman.
Chris played in three FIBA Asia Champions Cup tournaments. He was also part of the team for the 2011 FIBA Asia Championship. Gilas was a guest team in some PBA conferences. This allowed Chris to play in the 2009–10 PBA Philippine Cup and the 2011 Commissioner's Cup. In 2011, Gilas won a bronze medal in the Jones Cup.
2010 Asian Games
In 2010, Chris Tiu also played in the Asian Games. He scored 14 points, including four three-pointers, in a game they lost to Iran. He then scored 15 points in a win against Chinese Taipei. The team finished sixth in that tournament.
2011 SEABA Championship
To qualify for the 2011 FIBA Asia Championship, Chris Tiu and the Gilas team needed to finish in the top three of the 2011 SEABA Championship. Gilas won every game in the tournament. They earned the gold medal.
2011 SEA Games
Chris Tiu was the team captain of the Sinag Pilipinas team. This team was sent to the 2011 Southeast Asian Games. They won the gold medal against Thailand. His teammates included Ateneo Blue Eagles players like Kiefer Ravena and Greg Slaughter. They were coached by Norman Black and Glenn Capacio.
2012 SEABA Cup
With Chot Reyes as the new coach, Chris Tiu was part of the team for the 2012 SEABA Cup. They won every game in the tournament. This made Gilas the top team in Southeast Asia.
2018 Asian Games
In 2018, Coach Yeng Guiao led a team of Rain or Shine players, including Chris Tiu. They represented the Philippines in the 2018 Asian Games. This was Chris's last international tournament. He played alongside Filipino-American NBA player Jordan Clarkson. The team finished fifth, which was the highest a Philippine team had placed since 2002.

Chris Tiu's Player Skills
Chris Tiu was known for his great shooting skills. He also had a high basketball IQ and was a strong leader. Throughout his career, he made many important shots and free throws when the game was on the line. Coach Toroman, who made him team captain for Smart Gilas, said Chris was the "best captain" he ever had. This was because of his dedication and smart thinking in basketball.
His leadership was also clear in his PBA career. He became one of the experienced players for Rain or Shine. He helped calm tensions in the team and guided younger players. Even though he wasn't very tall and was considered a "heartthrob," he could be tough on the court. He would take charges and challenge shots when needed. He wasn't the most athletic player, so he worked extra hard on defense.
Chris Tiu's Personal Life
Chris Tiu married Clarisse Ong, an investment banker, on September 7, 2013. Their wedding was in Vancouver, Canada. They had been dating for twelve years. In May 2016, after winning the 2016 PBA Commissioner's Cup, Chris announced on Instagram that he and Clarisse were going to have their first child. Their daughter, Amanda Claire, was born on June 5, 2016. Their second daughter, Mari Diana, was born on February 25, 2018. The Tiu family are Catholics.
In July 2019, Chris Tiu was chosen as an ambassador for the Department of Science and Technology. Later that same year, he was the Deputy Director for the Volunteers Program at the 2019 SEA Games.
Chris Tiu's Role in Politics
Chris Tiu served as a local government official in Urdaneta, Makati. He was a barangay official from 2002 to 2018. First, he was the Sangguniang Kabataan Chairman. Later, he became a Barangay Kagawad. These are roles in local community governance.
Chris Tiu's Business Ventures
While he was in college, Chris Tiu started a food stall at Ateneo de Manila. It was called Chinky Chickens. He was able to open another branch at Miriam College. Chris Tiu has also started other businesses with partners. These include:
- Happy Lemon, which is a chain of tea shops.
- Eric Kayser, a French bakery and pastry shop.
- VLink Interactive, a company that helps with marketing. He is the chief marketing officer there.
Chris Tiu also promoted many brands. These included Adidas, Hanford underwear, Dockers, Levi's, and Nestlé. He is currently the brand ambassador for DFNN, an IT solutions company.
