Christopher Roger Woakes, born on March 2, 1989, is a talented English cricketer. He plays for the England team in all types of international cricket matches. In England, he plays for Warwickshire. He has also played for many Twenty20 teams around the world. These include the Kolkata Knight Riders, Royal Challengers Bangalore, and Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League.
Chris Woakes started playing One Day International (ODI) and Twenty20 International (T20I) matches in 2011. His first Test match was in 2013. He was a key player for England when they won the 2019 Cricket World Cup and the 2022 T20 World Cup.
Woakes is known as an all-rounder in cricket. This means he is good at both batting and bowling. He bats right-handed and bowls right-arm fast-medium.

Early Life and Football Dreams
Chris Woakes was born in March 1989 in Birmingham, England. He went to Barr Beacon Language College in Walsall from 2000 to 2007. He started playing cricket at age seven with Aston Manor Cricket Club. Later, he moved to Walmley Cricket Club.
Before focusing on cricket, Chris was also a promising footballer. He played as a winger for Walsall F.C. as a trainee. He continued playing football until he was 14 years old. Woakes is a big fan of the local football club Aston Villa F.C..
Cricket Journey: From Clubs to International Stage
Chris Woakes played for Warwickshire's younger teams from 2004 to 2007. He even played three games for Herefordshire County Cricket Club in 2006.
Starting with Warwickshire
Woakes played his first match for Warwickshire in 2006. This was during a tour by the West Indies team. He took three wickets in that game. By 2008, he became a regular player for Warwickshire's main team. He took 42 wickets that season, showing how good he was at bowling.
In 2009, Woakes was chosen for the England Lions squad. This team helps young players get ready for the main England team. In his first game for the Lions, he took 6 wickets for only 43 runs. That same year, he scored his first century (100 runs) in a first-class match. He scored 131 not out against Hampshire.
In July 2011, Woakes reached a big milestone. He took his 200th wicket in first-class cricket. This happened during Warwickshire's win over Sussex.
Playing in Twenty20 Leagues
Woakes has played in several Twenty20 leagues around the world. These short, exciting matches are very popular.
- In 2017, the Kolkata Knight Riders bought him for the Indian Premier League. He took 17 wickets in 13 matches.
- In 2018, he played for Royal Challengers Bangalore in the IPL. He took eight wickets in five matches.
- He was later bought by Delhi Capitals for the 2020 IPL season. However, he decided not to play to focus on England's Test matches. He was kept by Delhi for the 2021 season.
- In April 2022, the Birmingham Phoenix team picked him for The Hundred tournament.
England International Career
Chris Woakes made his international Twenty20 debut for England on January 12, 2011. This was against Australia in Adelaide. He took one wicket and scored the winning runs. In his second One Day International (ODI), he took an impressive 6 wickets for 45 runs.
He played his first Test match for England in 2013 against Australia. Woakes became a key part of England's ODI team. In 2014, he took 6 wickets for 47 runs against Sri Lanka. This was considered one of the best ODI bowling performances of the year.
World Cup Success and Records
Woakes was part of the England team for the 2015 Cricket World Cup. In 2016, he scored his highest ODI score of 95 not out against Sri Lanka. This was a record for a number eight batsman or lower.
In August 2018, he scored his first Test century (137 not out) against India at Lord's. Two years before, he had taken 11 wickets for 102 runs in a match at Lord's against Pakistan. These amazing achievements earned him a spot on both of Lord's honours boards. Only ten players have ever done this.
In April 2019, Woakes was selected for England's squad for the 2019 Cricket World Cup. He was named Player of the Match in the semi-final against Australia. He took three wickets, helping England reach the final. In the final against New Zealand, Woakes again took three wickets. England went on to win the tournament, their first World Cup victory since 1992.
Recent International Highlights
In June 2020, Woakes was part of England's squad for the Test series against the West Indies. In the second Test, he took his 100th wicket in Test matches. In 2021, he reached 150 ODI wickets in his career.
Woakes was also part of England's squad for the 2021 ICC Men's T20 World Cup and the 2022 ICC Men's T20 World Cup. He played in every game when England won the 2022 T20 World Cup. Chris Woakes is one of only six players to have won both the 2019 ODI World Cup and the 2022 T20 World Cup.
In 2023, Woakes was called back to play in the 2023 Ashes series against Australia. He took three wickets in each innings of the third Test. In the second innings, he scored 32 not out and hit the winning runs. His partnership with Harry Brook was the biggest for England in that match. For his great performances, taking 19 wickets in six innings, he was named England's "player of the series."
