Christopher Roger Woakes (born 2 March 1989) is a famous English cricketer. He plays for the England in all types of international cricket matches. He is known as an all-rounder, meaning he is skilled at both batting and bowling.

Chris bowls fast-medium with his right arm and bats right-handed. In England, he plays for Warwickshire. He has also played in many Twenty20 leagues around the world. These include teams like Kolkata Knight Riders and Royal Challengers Bangalore in the Indian Premier League.

Woakes made his international debut in 2011 for One Day and Twenty20 matches. He played his first Test match in 2013. He was a key player when England won the 2019 Cricket World Cup and the 2022 T20 World Cup.

Early Life and Cricket Start

Chris Woakes was born in March 1989 in Birmingham, England. He went to Barr Beacon Language College from 2000 to 2007. Chris started playing cricket when he was just seven years old. He joined a local team called Four Oaks Saints Cricket Club.

Before focusing on cricket, Chris also played football. He was a trainee winger for Walsall F.C. until he was 14. Chris is still a big fan of the football club Aston Villa F.C.. He played for Warwickshire's younger teams from 2004 to 2007.

Chris Woakes started playing for Warwickshire in 2006. He quickly became a regular player for their main team in 2008. That year, he took 42 wickets, showing his great bowling skills.

In 2009, Chris was chosen to play for the England Lions squad. This team helps young players get ready for the main England team. In one game, he took 6 wickets for only 43 runs. Later that season, he scored his first ever century (100 runs) in a first-class match. He scored 131 runs and helped his team a lot.

By 2011, Chris had taken 200 wickets in first-class cricket. This shows how consistent he was as a bowler.

Playing in Leagues Around the World

Chris has played for several teams in the Indian Premier League (IPL). This is a very popular Twenty20 cricket league in India.

  • In 2017, he played for Kolkata Knight Riders and took 17 wickets.

Chris Woakes made his international Twenty20 debut in 2011 against Australia. He bowled well and even scored the winning runs in that game. Soon after, he played his first One Day International (ODI) match. In his second ODI, he took an amazing 6 wickets for just 45 runs.

He made his Test match debut in 2013 against Australia. Chris became a very important part of England's ODI team. In 2014, he took 6 wickets for 47 runs against Sri Lanka. This was one of the best bowling performances of the year!

Big Achievements and World Cups

In 2016, Chris scored his highest ODI score of 95 runs, not out. This was against Sri Lanka. He shares a record for the highest ODI score by a number eight batsman or lower.

A huge moment for Chris was in August 2018. He scored his first Test century (137 not out) at Lord's cricket ground. This is a very famous stadium. Two years before, he had taken 11 wickets in a match at Lord's. Because of these achievements, his name is now on the Lord's honours boards. Only a few players have their names on both the batting and bowling boards!

In April 2019, Chris was chosen for England's squad for the 2019 Cricket World Cup. He was named "Player of the Match" in the semi-final against Australia. He took three important wickets, helping England reach the final. England then won the World Cup, their first time ever! Chris took three more wickets in the final.

In 2020, Chris took his 100th wicket in Test matches. In 2021, he reached 150 wickets in ODI matches.

Chris was also part of the England team that won the 2022 ICC Men's T20 World Cup. He played in every game and helped England beat Pakistan in the final. Chris is one of only six players to have won both the 2019 ODI World Cup and the 2022 T20 World Cup.

In 2023, Chris played in the 2023 Ashes series against Australia. He took 19 wickets in six innings and was named England's "player of the series." He also hit the winning runs in one exciting match!
