Discovering Christ Church's History
When Was Christ Church Built?
The church was designed in 1888 by an architect named Lawrence Booth. It took four years to build, finishing around 1892.
Who Paid for the Church?
The money for Christ Church came from Rev John Gorrell Haworth and Miss Nancy Haworth. They built it as a special memorial to Jesse Haworth. He was a successful manufacturer from Manchester who made cotton and fustian fabrics. You can even see his name written on the front of the church!
Exploring Christ Church's Design
What Does the Church Look Like?
Christ Church is a large building with a very wide main area called the nave. It also has a tall, impressive steeple at its southeast corner. This steeple can be seen from the town of Bury in the valley below.
Inside the Church: Special Features
The nave has two wide sections, called transepts, that cross it. Inside, the columns are made of granite and have special rings around them. Some parts of the church even have double rows of columns. The windows are in the Gothic style, which was popular when the church was built. Inside, you'll find a beautiful round font decorated with leaf patterns.
Christ Church and the Community
How Does the Church Help Locally?
Christ Church is very involved with the local community. It has connections with the church's own primary school and a local day nursery. The church also actively supports local groups that help people. These include Porch Boxes, which is a food bank, and Bury Street Pastors, who help people on the streets. They also support Bury's CAP Debt Centre, which helps people with money problems.
Global Connections and Support
The church also helps people around the world. It works with and supports organisations like 'Tearfund', which helps people in poverty, and the 'Bible Society', which shares Bibles. They also partner with 'Compassion' and 'The Bury Project: Christians Against Poverty'.
War Graves in the Churchyard
The churchyard is also home to the war graves of five service members. These include three soldiers and two airmen who died during World War II.
