Christ Church (grid reference SD775116) is a lively church community in Walshaw, Greater Manchester, England. The church building is very special. It is a Grade II* listed building. This means it is an important historical building that is protected.
The church was designed by Lawrence Booth in 1888. It took four years to build. The money for the church came from Rev John Gorrell Haworth and Miss Nancy Haworth. About the Church Building
The Christ Church building is quite large. It has a very wide main area called the nave. There is also a beautiful tall steeple at its southeast corner. You can see this steeple from the town of Bury in the valley below.
Inside the Church
Inside, the nave has two wide sections that cross it. These are called transepts. Each transept is two bays wide. The columns inside the church are made of granite. They have special rings around them. In some places, there are even double rows of columns. The windows are in a Gothic style. However, they have unusual horizontal bars called "transoms."
You will also find a lovely round font inside the church. A font is a basin used for baptisms. This one is decorated with a pattern called "stiff-leaf."
The Churchyard
The area around the church is called the churchyard. It contains war graves. These are the graves of three soldiers and two airmen who died in World War II.
Christ Church and the Community
Christ Church is very involved with the local community. It has connections with the church's own primary school. It also works with the local day nursery.
The church actively helps local groups that support people. These include both non-religious and Christian organizations. For example, it supports Porch Boxes food bank. It also helps Bury Street Pastors and Bury's CAP Debt Centre. These groups help people in need.
The church also supports national and international efforts. It works with 'Tearfund', the 'Bible Society', 'Compassion', and 'The Bury Project: Christians Against Poverty'. These groups help people around the world.
Services are usually held at 11am every Sunday.
