John Christopher "Chris" Stevens (born April 18, 1960 – died September 12, 2012) was an American diplomat. He served as the United States Ambassador to Libya from June 7, 2012, until his death later that year.
His Early Life and Education
Chris Stevens was born in Grass Valley, California, on April 18, 1960. He went to college at the University of California, Berkeley. He also studied law at the UC Hastings College of the Law and attended the National War College.
Becoming a Diplomat

In 1991, Chris Stevens joined the United States Foreign Service. This is a group of people who work for the U.S. government in other countries. Their job is to represent the U.S. and help Americans living abroad.
He worked in many different places around the world. These included Jerusalem, Damascus (in Syria), Cairo (in Egypt), and Riyadh (in Saudi Arabia). In Washington D.C., he worked on important topics like nuclear security and Middle Eastern affairs.
Serving as Ambassador to Libya
Chris Stevens had worked in Libya two times before becoming the ambassador. He was the Deputy Chief of Mission from 2007 to 2009. He also served as a Special Representative during the Libyan civil war in 2011. He arrived in Tripoli, Libya, in May 2012 to start his role as the U.S. Ambassador.
His Death
Chris Stevens died on September 12, 2012, in Benghazi, Libya. He was 52 years old. He passed away after breathing in smoke during an attack on the U.S. diplomatic mission.
He is buried in his family's plot in Grass Valley, California.
