Chijioke Obinna "Chukie" Nwokorie (pronounced CHOO-key Wha-KOR-ee) was born on July 10, 1975. He is a former American football defensive end. Chukie played college football at Purdue University. In 1999, he joined the Indianapolis Colts as a free agent who was not chosen in the draft.

Nwokorie played for five years in the National Football League (NFL). After that, he spent two years in the Arena Football League (AFL). His professional football career ended in 2007.

About Chukie Nwokorie

Early Life and Family

Chukie Nwokorie was born on July 10, 1975, in Tuskegee, Alabama. His parents had moved to the United States from Nigeria. This made him an American citizen from birth. He lived in Alabama for his first seven years.

When his parents divorced, he moved to Nigeria and lived there until he was 16. Life in Nigeria was difficult, and he experienced poverty. As a teenager, he was adopted by John and Patricia Stephenson in Lafayette, Indiana. He joined their family, which already had three boys and a girl.

High School Football

Chukie played high school football for only two years at Jefferson High School in Lafayette. At first, he wanted to be a placekicker because he had played soccer. He thought kicking would be easy.

However, his coaches wanted him to try other positions. They tried him at fullback, but it did not work out. He often dropped the ball. So, they trained him to be a defensive lineman. Even with limited experience, he was recognized as an honorable mention for the Indiana All-State team in 1994. During his high school career, Chukie made 88 tackles, 8.5 sacks, forced 4 fumbles, and recovered 3 fumbles.

College Football Career

Chukie played college football at Purdue University. He played for four years and was a starter for one year. During his senior year at Purdue, he had a knee injury. This injury kept him out of the first two games and affected his performance all season.

Because of this injury, he was not invited to the NFL Scouting Combine. This meant he had to show his skills to scouts through private workouts. Despite his lack of experience, his Purdue coaches believed he had great potential for the NFL. His defensive ends coach, Randy Melvin, said Chukie was a "physical specimen" and a "tough kid" who worked hard.

Professional Football Journey

Starting in the NFL

Chukie Nwokorie was not chosen in the 1999 NFL draft. This meant he had to try to join the National Football League as an undrafted free agent. In April 1999, he signed a deal with the Indianapolis Colts. Other teams like the Pittsburgh Steelers, Cincinnati Bengals, and Chicago Bears were also interested.

Chukie's agent decided that the Colts offered the best chance for him to make a team. He did earn a spot on the Colts' 53-man roster. He was one of four undrafted free agents to make the team under head coach Jim Mora. Making the team was stressful, as he felt he was "on the bubble."

The Colts saw Chukie as a player for the future, not someone ready to start right away. He had started playing football late. This sometimes made it hard for him to understand complex defensive plays.

Playing for the Colts

Chukie played in only three games during his first two years in the NFL. His first game was on November 7, 1999, playing a few plays on special teams. For most of his first two years, he was on the team's inactive list.

In 2001, Chukie became a regular part of the Colts' defense. He played in all 16 games. He started six games as a left defensive end because other teammates were injured.

A big moment in his career happened in the first game of the 2001 season against the New York Jets. Chukie picked up a fumble at his own 5-yard line. He then ran 95 yards for a touchdown! The Jets quarterback, Vinnie Testaverde, tried to tackle him but could not stop the big Colt. Chukie finished the 2001 season with 45 tackles and 5 sacks for the Colts.

Injuries and New Teams

Before the 2002 NFL campaign, Chukie injured his lower back. This injury prevented him from playing football. He was placed on the Physically Unable to Perform list for most of the season. He played in only three games in 2002 for the new Colts head coach, Tony Dungy. He made only two tackles that year.

After the 2002 season, Chukie became a free agent. He visited the New York Giants and Green Bay Packers. The Seattle Seahawks and Denver Broncos were also interested. In April 2003, Chukie signed a two-year contract with the Packers. His agent said that Chukie chose the Packers because he felt it was the best chance to play, not just for the money.

Chukie played 14 games for Green Bay in 2003 as a reserve player. He made 16 solo tackles and forced one fumble. After an injury in training camp, the Packers released him on September 5, 2004. At 29 years old, Chukie was out of football. In January 2005, he signed a deal with the Denver Broncos.

Arena Football League Career

Chukie then played two seasons in the Arena Football League. He played for the Las Vegas Gladiators in 2006 and the Grand Rapids Rampage in 2007.

Life After Football

After his football career, Chukie worked as an intern at a radio station in Indianapolis from 2004 to 2005. He helped with a show called Morning Mess.

Today, Chukie lives in Indianapolis, Indiana, with his wife, Jamila. He works in business development. As a former NFL player, Chukie is part of a health program called "The Trust: Brain and Body." This program is run by the National Football League Players' Association (NFLPA). It offers a two-day health check-up to help former players with football-related medical issues.

Chukie had his first check-up in 2016 and was found to be healthy. A second check-up was planned for 2021 but was delayed because of the COVID-19 epidemic. Chukie himself caught the virus and was sick for about 10 days. In 2023, he went to the Cleveland Clinic for his full medical exam. He was surprised to learn that he was suffering from heart failure. Only 25% of his heart was working correctly.

Diet and lifestyle changes did not help. So, in March 2024, he had open heart surgery to implant a dual chamber defibrillator. This device helps his heart function better. The surgery cost over $95,000. His friend and former Colts teammate, Rick DeMulling, started a Go Fund Me campaign to help Chukie with the costs. In the first few days, nearly $20,000 was raised. NFL Alumni chapters contributed $13,200 of this amount.
