Chullora is a small area, or suburb, located about 15 kilometres west of Sydney in New South Wales, Australia. It is part of the City of Canterbury-Bankstown area. Chullora is mostly made up of factories and businesses, so not many people live there. In 2021, only 14 people were counted as living in Chullora.

History of Chullora

Chullora was once part of a larger area called Liberty Plains. This land was given to the first free settlers who came to Sydney Cove way back in 1793. In the 1950s, many new immigrants from Europe lived in Chullora for a while before moving to other parts of Sydney.

The name Chullora comes from an Aboriginal word that means 'flour'. It's interesting that a big bakery, Tip Top Bakeries, is now located in Chullora, bringing the area back to its original meaning!

Chullora During World War II

During World War II, Chullora became a very important secret manufacturing plant. It was a huge site where military items were made. Imagine a factory that produced parts for planes, tanks, and even bombs! Over two thousand people worked there every day, helping with the war effort.

The factory made parts for hundreds of different aircraft, like the Beaufort and Beaufighter planes. They also built tanks and adapted others for the Australian Military. This secret plant was a key part of Australia's contribution to the war.

The Underground Bunker

Underneath Chullora, there's an old underground "bunker" and a system of tunnels. It's located beneath some apartment buildings. The entrance to this bunker was once through steel doors set into a hillside. These doors were sealed up many years ago.

There are also storage areas that stretch under the railway workshop. Air vents for these underground spaces can still be seen from the nearby Hume Highway. Some people even believe there's a long tunnel connecting this complex to another bunker in Bankstown, which was a military headquarters during the war.

Population

Chullora has a very small population because it's mainly an industrial area. It's next to other suburbs like Rookwood that also have very few residents. As mentioned, in 2021, only 14 people lived in Chullora.

Businesses and Industry

Chullora is a busy industrial hub. You'll find many factories and warehouses here. For example, Tip Top Bakeries makes bread, and OfficeMax has a large warehouse in the Chullora Business Park.

This suburb is also where many of Sydney's newspapers and magazines are printed. Big companies like Nine Entertainment and News Corp Australia print their daily and Sunday papers here.

One unique sight in Chullora is "The Big Bicycle" outside the Chullora Recycling Centre. It's a fun roadside attraction that you can spot. In 2011, Volkswagen Group Australia opened their main office and a parts distribution centre in Chullora.

The Chullora Railway Workshops used to fix and maintain trains, but this work is now done by private companies. Even though there are railway workshops, Chullora does not have its own train station for passengers.

It's good to know that the Chullora Market Place, a shopping centre, is actually located in the nearby suburb of Greenacre, even though it has Chullora in its name.

Transport

The main road that runs along the south of Chullora is the Hume Highway. Other important roads include Brunker Road and Rookwood Road (A6).

While there's a lot of railway track in Chullora, it's only used for freight trains carrying goods, not for passenger trains. So, you won't find a train station in Chullora itself. However, Transit Systems operates bus services in the area. The closest train station for passengers is Punchbowl.

Sport

If you're into football, the local team for Chullora is the Central Sydney Wolves. Their home ground is at Lockwood Park.
