About St. Mary and St. Peter's Church
The main part of the church you see today was rebuilt in 1796. However, the tall tower is much older. It was built around the year 1437 and is still standing strong.
What Does the Church Look Like?
The church has a main open area called a nave, and a special area near the altar called a chancel. There are also side sections known as north and south aisles.
The church has a tall, four-story tower on its west side. This tower is supported by strong walls called buttresses. It also has a small, many-sided staircase that goes up from the roof. Around the top of the tower, there's a decorative wall called a parapet. This parapet has pointed decorations called pinnacles and stone carvings of faces, called gargoyles, at the corners.
The tower is home to six bells. These bells were carefully re-tuned in 2006 so they would sound perfect.
Inside the Church
When you go inside, you'll find a special bowl for baptisms, called a font. There is also a wooden stand where the priest gives sermons, known as a pulpit.
Some of the windows have beautiful stained glass. These colorful windows show pictures of old family shields, called heraldic shields. Below the tower, there is a canvas with a coat of arms painted on it.
Outside in the churchyard, there are also some old monuments. One is a monument that hasn't been identified yet. Another is called the Shire Monument, which dates back to about 1764. These are also protected as listed structures.
Church Community
The church is part of a larger group of churches called a benefice. This specific benefice includes Winford with Felton Common. It belongs to the Diocese of Bath and Wells, which is a big area managed by the church.
