The Church of Vilupulli (which is Iglesia de Vilupulli in Spanish) is a beautiful Catholic church located in a town called Vilupulli. This town is part of the Chonchi area on Chiloé Island in southern Chile.
This church is very special! It was named a National Monument of Chile in 1971. This means it's an important historical building for the country. Even more amazing, it's one of 16 Churches of Chiloé that were chosen as UNESCO World Heritage Sites on November 30, 2000. A World Heritage Site is a place that is important to everyone in the world.
History of the Church
The Church of Vilupulli was built a long time ago, at the beginning of the 1900s. It has been standing for over 100 years!
Who is Saint Anthony?
The church's special protector, or patron saint, is Saint Anthony. A patron saint is like a guardian for a place or a group of people. Saint Anthony's special day is celebrated every year on June 13. The Church of Colo, another church in the area, also has Saint Anthony as its patron saint.
Part of a Larger Group
The Church of Vilupulli is part of a bigger church family called the parish of San Carlos, Chonchi. This parish is one of 24 parishes that make up the Diocese of Ancud. Think of it like a team of churches working together.
