Clare Smyth is a famous chef from Northern Ireland. She was born on September 6, 1978. Clare is known for her amazing cooking skills. She owns and runs two restaurants, Core by Clare Smyth in London and Oncore in Sydney.

Her London restaurant, Core, has earned three Michelin stars. This is a very high award for restaurants. It made her the first woman from Northern Ireland to achieve this honor. Before opening her own restaurants, Clare was the head chef at Restaurant Gordon Ramsay. She also won the "Chef of the Year" award in 2013. You might have seen her on TV shows like Masterchef and Saturday Kitchen.

Early life and inspiration

Clare Smyth grew up on a farm in County Antrim, Northern Ireland. She is the youngest of three children. Her dad, William, was a farmer, and her mom, Doreen, worked as a waitress.

When she was 15, Clare had a holiday job at a local restaurant. This job made her want to become a chef. She left school at 16 to study cooking at Highbury College in Portsmouth, England.

Clare's cooking journey

While studying to be a chef, Clare worked at Grayshott Hall in Surrey. After that, she worked full-time at Terence Conran's restaurant in London. She also spent six months working for a catering company in Australia.

When she came back to the UK, she worked in several famous restaurants. These included The Waterside Inn and Gidleigh Park. She also worked at the St Enodoc Hotel in Cornwall. There, she started as a sous chef and later became the head chef. She even won an award called "Young Cornish Fish Chef of the Year."

Working with Gordon Ramsay

In 2002, the famous chef Gordon Ramsay offered Clare a job. She joined his restaurant, Restaurant Gordon Ramsay. In 2007, Clare became the new head chef there. This was a big deal because she was the first female chef in the UK to lead a restaurant with three Michelin stars. At that time, only seven of the 121 Michelin-starred restaurants in Britain had female head chefs.

Before returning to lead Gordon Ramsay's restaurant, Clare spent a year and a half working in Monaco. She worked at Alain Ducasse's Le Louis XV restaurant. She then came back to the UK to take over the Chelsea-based restaurant.

Awards and recognition

In 2013, Clare Smyth was named the "National Chef of the Year" by the Good Food Guide. She also received an honor called Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE). This award was given to her for her great work in the restaurant industry.

In 2015, the Good Food Guide gave her a perfect score of ten. This showed how highly her cooking was rated. In 2016, she won the "Chef Award" at The Catey Awards. Her mentor, Gordon Ramsay, had won this same award in 2000.

Opening her own restaurants

Core by Clare Smyth

Clare Smyth left Restaurant Gordon Ramsay in 2016. She wanted to open her very own restaurant. Her first solo restaurant, Core, opened in London in July 2017. In April 2018, Core was named the "Best Restaurant" at the GQ Food and Drink Awards.

In 2018, Clare was also named the "World's Best Female Chef" by the World's 50 Best Restaurants. She appeared as a judge on the TV show The Final Table.

On October 1, 2018, Core was given two Michelin stars. Then, in the 2021 Michelin Guide, Core earned three Michelin stars. This made Clare the first British woman to have a restaurant with three Michelin stars.

Oncore in Sydney

In early 2021, it was announced that Clare would open another restaurant. This one would be in Sydney, Australia. Her second restaurant, Oncore, opened in November 2021. It is located on the 26th floor of the Crown Sydney building.

Oncore quickly became very popular. A review in Bloomberg magazine called it "Sydney's best restaurant." Clare could not be there for the opening because of travel rules during the Covid-19 pandemic.
