Early Life and Studies

Claudine Monteil's mother, Josiane Serre, was a chemist. She later became the director of a special school for young women. Her father, Jean-Pierre Serre, is a very famous mathematician who has won important awards like the Fields Medal and the Abel Prize.

Claudine Monteil herself earned an advanced degree. She focused her studies on the life and writings of a famous French writer named Simone de Beauvoir.

Fighting for Women's Rights

In 1970, Claudine Monteil helped start the women's rights movement in France. She was also one of the people who signed the Manifesto of the 343. This was a public statement asking for women's rights.

She has written many books about Simone de Beauvoir. While working on women's rights, Claudine Monteil became close friends with Beauvoir, the philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre, and Beauvoir's sister, the painter Hélène de Beauvoir. Her writings about these important figures and about French feminism have been translated into many languages.

A Diplomat for France

Claudine Monteil worked as a French diplomat until the end of 2014. In this role, she worked for the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
