Clock Face is a village and area in the town of St Helens, England. It is about 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) south of the town center. This area is part of the Metropolitan Borough of St Helens. It also belongs to the parish of Bold.
Historically, Clock Face was part of Lancashire. The village got its name from a large clock face that was on an old inn. A local colliery (coal mine) also took this name. The Clock Face public house today is near the original spot. It keeps the old naming tradition alive.
Sports in Clock Face
Clock Face is home to a local rugby league team called Clock Face Miners. This team started in 1921. Back then, they were known as 'Clock Face Rangers'. Their team colors are yellow and blue.
History of Industry
This area was very important for coal mining. There were three large coal mines nearby. Clock Face Colliery closed in 1966. Sutton Manor Colliery stopped working in 1991. Parkside Colliery was the last deep coal mine in the Lancashire Coalfield. It closed in 1992.
Today, Clock Face Country Park is located where one of the old mines used to be. In the late 1990s, the St Helens Council turned this 57-acre (23-hectare) site into a public park. It has growing woodlands and open meadow areas. There is also a fishing pond that a local angling club uses. An old railway path has been turned into a walking trail. This path leads to Sutton Manor Woodlands.
Getting Around Clock Face
Clock Face once had its own train station. It was called Clock Face railway station on Gartons Lane. Today, people in the area use Lea Green railway station. This station is on the train line that goes from Liverpool to Manchester.
