Getting Around Cluden

Cluden has some important roads that help people travel through and around it. The Bruce Highway, a major road, goes through the south-western part of the suburb. Other roads like South Townsville Road and Townsville Connection Road are also nearby. The Townsville Port Road passes through the south-eastern corner, connecting to the port.

A Look Back: Cluden's History

The name Cluden comes from a property owned by James Gordon. He was an important customs officer in Townsville back in 1865. He likely named it after Cluden Water, which is a stream in Scotland near where he was born.

A long time ago, the Cluden railway station was built here. Because of this, the local racecourse was moved to Cluden. This made it easier for people from many different areas to come to the races by train. Even though the railway station is now closed, the racecourse is still an important part of Cluden.

Who Lives in Cluden?

Cluden is a smaller suburb. In 2011, about 509 people lived there. By 2016, the population was 427, and in 2021, it was 413 people. This shows that the number of people living in Cluden has stayed fairly consistent over the years.

Special Places in Cluden

Some parts of the Cluden Racecourse are very old and important. The grandstand, the old building where betting happened (called a totalisator building), and the main entrance gates are all listed on the Queensland Heritage Register. This means they are protected because they have historical value.
