Oonoonba is a suburb located in Townsville, Queensland, Australia. It is part of the City of Townsville area. In 2021, about 2,050 people lived in Oonoonba.

Where is Oonoonba?

Oonoonba is about 5.8 kilometers (3.6 miles) south of Townsville's city center. The Ross River forms its northern border. A railway line also runs along its southern edge.

Most of Oonoonba is a residential area where people live. It used to feel a bit far from Townsville. However, new homes built in the nearby suburb of Idalia have connected Oonoonba more closely to the main city area.

Some parts of Oonoonba, especially near the river, are marshland. This means they are wet and swampy, so they are not used for building.

The North Coast railway line goes through Oonoonba. It crosses the Ross River to reach Railway Estate. There is an Oonoonba railway station, but it no longer has any buildings or services.

South Townsville Road (also called Abbot Street) runs through the suburb. It goes parallel to the railway line and crosses the Ross River on Rooneys Bridge. At this point, there are three bridges side-by-side: one for trains, one for walking and cycling, and one for cars.

A Look at Oonoonba's Past

The name Oonoonba comes from its railway station, which was named in 1880. It is an Aboriginal word that means water or wet ground. This makes sense because of the marshy areas in the suburb.

Oonoonba State School first opened its doors on 15 November 1920. The original school building was later removed to make way for a new road. A "new school" was then built and opened in 2002. It is still open and teaching students today.

Population of Oonoonba

In 2016, Oonoonba had a population of 1,675 people. By 2021, the number of people living in Oonoonba had grown to 2,050.
