Coates is a small village located in the English county of Cambridgeshire. It is very close to the town of Whittlesey. In Coates, you'll find a local shop that also has a post office.

Exploring Coates Village

Coates is known for its two main green areas: North Green and South Green. These two greens are separated by the busy A605 road, which goes right through the village.

Besides the shop and post office, Coates has a church, a village hall, and a primary school. You can also find a few local businesses here. These include a Chinese takeaway called Lucky House, two pubs named The Carpenters Arms and The Vine, and a special shop that sells violins. There are also several farms around the village.

On North Green, you can see a war memorial. The village also has its own fishing lake, which is a great spot for anglers. In 1993, Coates was even named Fenland's best-kept village!

Fun Events in Coates

Coates is famous for its exciting Petanque competitions. Petanque is a game similar to bocce or bowls. People from different countries, like the Netherlands and Austria, come to Coates to compete.

The village also hosts a popular annual Village Show. This traditional event brings the community together for a day of fun and activities.

A Look at Coates' History

The name "Coates" comes from an older word, "Cotes," which means "cottages." On old maps, the village was sometimes called "Moreton's Cotes." This name referred to Bishop Morton, who was an important person in the past.

Village Churches

The Holy Trinity Church in Coates is an Anglican church. It was built in 1840 and designed by an architect named James William Wild. He gave the church a unique look, using bricks in a style inspired by Norman architecture.

There was also a Methodist church on North Green. It opened in the early 1840s. However, it closed in August 2012 because it needed very expensive repairs. After it closed, a company that makes blinds bought the building.

Coates on the Big Screen

Coates has even been part of a movie! Some scenes for the 2007 war film Atonement were filmed just outside the village. The movie starred famous actress Keira Knightley. The filming took place at the end of Eldernell Lane, near Coates.
