Cody Ray Allen Garbrandt (born July 7, 1991) is an American professional mixed martial artist. He is known for competing in the Bantamweight division of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). He was once the UFC Bantamweight Champion.

Early Life and Sports

Cody Garbrandt was born in Uhrichsville, Ohio, on July 7, 1991. He grew up there, mostly raised by his mother, Jessica. Cody has an older brother, Zach, and they often played and fought together as kids.

Starting with Combat Sports

When Cody was four and Zach was five, they started learning boxing from their uncle, Robert Meese. He was a talented boxer who almost went to the Olympics. Their mother was worried about them getting hurt, so she encouraged them to try wrestling instead.

High School Achievements

At Claymont High School, Cody was very good at both wrestling and football.

  • In 2007, as a freshman, he won a state championship in wrestling.
  • He was a runner-up in 2008.
  • In football, he was recognized as an All-State linebacker during his junior year.

After high school, Cody focused more on boxing. He had an amazing record of 32 wins and 0 losses as an amateur boxer over about six years. Even though he didn't wrestle much in his last two years of high school, he still placed fifth in a national tournament. He even got interest from big colleges like Penn State. He went to Newberry College for a short time but decided to leave to follow his passion for boxing.

After college, Cody worked different jobs, including training to be a coal miner. But his real dream was to become a professional mixed martial artist. He started helping MMA camps with their wrestling training, which led him to his own MMA journey.

Mixed Martial Arts Career
