Cody Ray Allen Garbrandt (born July 7, 1991) is an American professional mixed martial artist. He competes in the Bantamweight division of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). He is also a former UFC Bantamweight Champion.

Early Life and Sports
Cody Garbrandt was born and grew up in Uhrichsville, Ohio, on July 7, 1991. He was mainly raised by his mother, Jessica. Cody has an older brother, Zach, who is ten months older. They often played together and had a lot of energy as kids. Cody was adopted by his mother's former husband when he was 10 years old.
When Cody was four and Zach was five, they started learning boxing. Their uncle, Robert Meese, was a talented boxer who had been an Olympic alternate.
High School Sports Achievements
At Claymont High School, Cody was a talented athlete. He competed in both wrestling and football.
- In 2007, as a freshman, he won a state championship in wrestling.
- In 2008, he was a runner-up in the state wrestling championship.
- He also earned All-State honors as a linebacker in football during his junior year.
After high school, Cody decided to focus on boxing. He had an impressive amateur boxing record of 32 wins and no losses over about six years. Even though he didn't wrestle much in his last two years of high school, he still competed in a national tournament as a senior. He placed fifth and earned All-American honors.
After school, Cody worked as a bouncer. He also trained to work in coal mining, a field familiar to his family. However, he soon decided to fully commit to his amateur mixed martial arts (MMA) career. He had already been helping MMA training camps with their wrestling.
Mixed Martial Arts Career
Starting His Professional Journey
Cody Garbrandt had his first amateur MMA fight in 2009. He built an amateur record of 6 wins and 2 losses before becoming a professional fighter in 2012. His professional record currently stands at 14 wins and 6 losses. Many of his wins (11) have come by knockout.
To improve his career, Cody moved from Ohio to Sacramento, California. There, he joined Team Alpha Male, a famous MMA gym. After winning a fight in October 2014, he signed with the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC).
Fighting in the UFC
Cody made his UFC debut on January 3, 2015, at UFC 182. He won his first fight against Marcus Brimage by TKO (Technical Knockout) in the third round.
- On July 11, 2015, at UFC 189, he faced Henry Briones. Cody won by unanimous decision, meaning all judges agreed he won. This was his first fight that went the full distance.
- In February 2016, he was supposed to fight John Lineker. But Lineker got sick with Dengue Fever and was replaced by Augusto Mendes. Cody won this fight by TKO in the first round.
- Cody then fought Thomas Almeida on May 29, 2016. Both fighters were undefeated at the time. Cody won by knockout in the first round and earned a "Performance of the Night" bonus for his exciting finish.
- His next fight was against Takeya Mizugaki on August 20, 2016, at UFC 202. Cody won quickly, by TKO in the first minute of the first round.
Becoming UFC Bantamweight Champion
Cody Garbrandt got his chance to fight for the UFC Bantamweight Championship on December 30, 2016. He faced the champion, Dominick Cruz, at UFC 207. Cody won the fight by unanimous decision. He even knocked Cruz down twice and almost finished him in the fourth round. This win made Cody the new UFC Bantamweight Champion! This exciting fight also earned both fighters a "Fight of the Night" bonus.
In 2017, Cody became a coach on "The Ultimate Fighter 25," a reality TV show. He coached against his former teammate, T.J. Dillashaw. They were set to fight, but Cody had a back injury. The fight was rescheduled for November 4, 2017, at UFC 217. Cody lost the fight by TKO in the second round, which was his first professional loss. He also lost his championship title.
Cody had a rematch with T.J. Dillashaw for the UFC Bantamweight Championship on August 4, 2018, at UFC 227. Unfortunately, Cody lost again, this time by knockout in the first round.
After the Championship
After losing his title, Cody continued to fight in the UFC.
- On March 2, 2019, he faced Pedro Munhoz at UFC 235. Cody lost by TKO in the first round, but it was an exciting fight that earned both fighters a "Fight of the Night" bonus.
- Cody was scheduled to fight Raphael Assunção in March 2020, but he had to pull out due to kidney problems. They eventually fought on June 6, 2020, at UFC 250. Cody won this fight with a powerful one-punch knockout in the second round. This win earned him another "Performance of the Night" award.
In August 2020, Cody planned to move to a lighter weight class, flyweight, to challenge for that championship. However, he had to withdraw from the fight after testing positive for COVID-19. He also suffered from other health issues like thrombosis (blood clots), brain fog, and pneumonia.
After recovering, Cody returned to the bantamweight division.
- On May 22, 2021, he fought Rob Font and lost by unanimous decision.
Moving to Flyweight and Back
Cody made his flyweight debut on December 11, 2021, at UFC 269. He fought Kai Kara-France and lost by TKO in the first round.
After one fight at flyweight, Cody decided to return to the bantamweight division.
- He was scheduled to fight Rani Yahya twice in 2022, but both fights were canceled due to Yahya's injuries. Cody also got injured during training.
- On March 4, 2023, at UFC 285, Cody was set to fight Julio Arce, but Arce withdrew due to a knee injury. Trevin Jones stepped in as a replacement. Cody won the fight by unanimous decision, getting back to winning ways.
- Cody was supposed to fight Mario Bautista in August 2023, but he had to withdraw due to another injury.
- On December 16, 2023, at UFC 296, Cody faced Brian Kelleher. He won the fight by knockout in the first round.
- Cody fought Deiveson Figueiredo on April 13, 2024, at UFC 300. He lost the fight by submission in the second round. This was his first loss by submission.
- He was scheduled for a fight in October 2024, which was moved to November 2024, but then canceled because Cody withdrew for undisclosed reasons.
Personal Life
Cody Garbrandt met Danny Pimsanguan during his fighting career. They got married in July 2017. In March 2018, they welcomed their first child, a son. In 2023, Cody announced that he and his wife had divorced.
