Coffee City is a small town located in the southeastern part of Henderson County, Texas, United States. It's a quiet community with a population of 249 people, according to the 2020 census. This number was slightly lower than the 278 people counted in the 2010 census.

History of Coffee City

Coffee City began to grow after Lake Palestine was built in the early 1960s. The town is located on a narrow strip of Henderson County land that reaches out to Lake Palestine and Texas State Highway 155. Because of its location, many businesses opened in the area during the 1980s. These businesses aimed to serve people from nearby Tyler and Smith County. However, the importance of Coffee City as a business hub changed in 2012 when new laws allowed similar businesses to open in Tyler.

Geography of Coffee City

Coffee City is found in the southeastern part of Henderson County. It sits right on the western edge of Lake Palestine, which is a large reservoir (a man-made lake) on the Neches River. The town's boundaries actually extend into the middle of the lake. This part of the lake forms the border with Smith and Cherokee counties.

To the south, Coffee City includes Ledbetter Bay and its two smaller water areas, Ledbetter Inlet and Highsaw Cove. To the north, the town goes past the Caney Bay inlet.

Highways and Nearby Cities

Texas State Highway 155 goes through Coffee City, crossing Ledbetter Bay and then Lake Palestine into Smith County. This highway is important for travel.

  • It leads northeast about 19 miles (31 km) to the city of Tyler.
  • It goes south about 6 miles (10 km) to Frankston.
  • Athens, which is the main city of Henderson County, is about 29 miles (47 km) west of Coffee City by highway.
