What Does the Name Cogua Mean?

The name Cogua comes from the Chibcha language. This language was spoken by the Muisca people long ago. In their language, Cogua means "Support of the hill."

A Look Back: Cogua's History

Before the Spanish arrived, the area where Cogua is now was home to the Muisca people. They were an advanced civilization living on the Altiplano Cundiboyacense, a high plateau.

Cogua was an important place because it was located between two major sources of halite, which is rock salt. These salt sources were in the towns of Zipaquirá and Nemocón. Salt was a very important part of the Muisca economy. They used it for trading with other groups.

The modern town of Cogua was officially started on August 23, 1604. It was founded by a person named Lorenzo de Terrones.
