History of Coldspring

The story of Coldspring is connected to Stephen F. Austin's first colony in Texas. This colony helped create places like San Jacinto County. Joseph Vehlein, a German immigrant, gave 640 acres (2.6 km2) of land to Robert Rankin. This land included the spot where Coldspring is today.

The area began to be settled around 1850. Before that, in 1848, there was only a trading post nearby called "Coonskin." Later, it was known as "Fireman's Hill."

By 1915, Coldspring had become a busy county seat. However, a big fire happened on March 30, 1915. The old wooden courthouse burned down. This was a major setback for the town. Plans were then made for a new courthouse. The new building was finished in 1918. After the new courthouse was built, people moved their homes and businesses closer to its new location.
