Exploring the Coldwater River
The Coldwater River is a natural waterway in Michigan. It helps drain water from a large area. This area is called a drainage basin. The river's journey ends when it joins another river.
Where the River Flows
The Coldwater River flows through two main counties. These are Barry County and Kent County. Its drainage basin also reaches into parts of Ionia County. A tiny bit of Eaton County is also included.
The River's Journey
The Coldwater River begins in Carlton Township. This is in Barry County. It forms from a smaller stream called the Little Thornapple River.
The river first flows north for a few miles. Then, it mostly turns west. Finally, the Coldwater River flows into the Thornapple River. This meeting point is in southern Caledonia Township.
River Branches and Streams
Many smaller streams and drains flow into the Coldwater River. These are called tributaries. They add water to the main river. Some of these include:
- Clarke and Bunker Drain
- Tyler Creek (also known as Bear Creek)
- Duck Creek
- Geieger Drain
- Stecklee Drain
- Bullhead Drain
- Bird Drain
- Messer Brook
- The Little Thornapple River, which is where the Coldwater River starts.
These smaller waterways collect water from lakes and land. They all contribute to the Coldwater River's flow.
