Tributaries

Coleman Creek is a stream located in San Diego County, California. It is a tributary of the San Diego River. A tributary is a smaller stream or river that flows into a larger one. Coleman Creek starts high up in the Cuyamaca Mountains.

Where Does Coleman Creek Flow?

Coleman Creek begins on the west side of the Cuyamaca Mountains. This is just south of a place called Kentwood-In-The-Pines. It flows down a valley towards the town of Julian. After Julian, the creek turns west.

It then flows through a canyon. Along its path, it passes the old site of Branson City. Two smaller streams, Eastwood Creek and Baily Creek, join Coleman Creek. These are also tributaries to Coleman Creek. Finally, Coleman Creek flows into the San Diego River. This meeting point is in Quanai Canyon.

A Golden History

Coleman Creek is famous for its history with gold. In 1869, a person named A. E. Coleman found gold in its waters. This discovery started a big event called a gold rush. Many people rushed to the Cuyamaca Mountains hoping to find gold.

Because of the gold rush, several gold mining camps and towns were started. These included Coleman City, Branson City, Eastwood, and the town of Julian. The creek was named after A. E. Coleman because of his important discovery.
