Colin Edward Lloyd (born August 7, 1973) is an English former professional darts player. He was known by his nickname "Jaws". Colin played in events organized by the Professional Darts Corporation (PDC). He was even ranked as the world's number one player for a long time, from April 2005 to January 2007. During his career, he won two big televised tournaments: the World Grand Prix in 2004 and the World Matchplay in 2005.

Colin Lloyd's Darts Journey

Starting Out in Darts

Colin Lloyd began playing darts when he was just a schoolboy. By the age of 13, he was already playing for his home county, Essex, in youth leagues. When he turned 16, he became a full county player. Before darts became his full-time job, he worked as a builder.

Becoming a Professional Player

Colin started his professional darts career in 1999. He made his first appearance on TV that same year. In his first big tournament, the 1999 PDC World Matchplay, he beat some tough opponents. He reached the quarter-finals before losing to Peter Manley.

His first time playing in the World Championship was in 2000. He didn't do well, losing in the first round. After another early exit in 2001, he had a big breakthrough in the 2002 World Championship. He made it all the way to the semi-finals, showing everyone he was a top player.

Reaching World Number One

Colin won his first major title at the 2004 World Grand Prix. He beat Alan Warriner in the final. Because he was doing so well in other tournaments, his world ranking kept going up. In April 2005, he became the world number one! He held this top spot for almost two years.

Soon after becoming number one, he won another big title: the 2005 World Matchplay in Blackpool. He beat John Part in the final, hitting many perfect scores of 180. He also reached the final of the 2005 World Grand Prix, but lost to the legendary Phil Taylor.

Challenges and Later Career

After his amazing success, Colin faced some tough times. He lost his world number one ranking in 2007. This happened after he lost a close match at the 2007 World Championship. He was ahead 3-0 in sets but ended up losing 3-4.

His ranking continued to drop as he lost early in several tournaments. By the 2008 World Championship, he was ranked 12th in the world. This was a big change from being number one just a year before.

In 2011, during a World Championship match, Colin got frustrated and punched the dartboard. He later said he regretted it and that it was just pure frustration.

Final Years in Darts

In 2012, Colin made it to the last 16 of the World Championship. He also hit a nine-dart finish in a European Tour event. A nine-dart finish is when a player finishes a game of 501 points in the fewest possible throws, which is nine. This is very rare and difficult! He also won a Players Championship event, which was his first ranking title in almost two years.

However, Colin's form started to dip again. He missed playing in the UK Open for the first time in its history in 2014. He also didn't qualify for other major tournaments. By the end of 2014, he was ranked 35th in the world. He even said he might retire if his performance didn't improve.

His form didn't get better in 2015. He couldn't qualify for any major tournaments and only reached the last 32 once. After the 2016 World Championship, his ranking dropped to 121st. He then announced that he would not be trying to get back into professional darts for a while. He officially retired from the PDC in 2018.

Premier League Appearances

Colin Lloyd was invited to play in the first three Premier League tournaments from 2005 to 2007. This tournament only invited the very best players.

  • In 2005, he finished second in the league stage but lost in the final to Phil Taylor.
  • In 2006, he reached the semi-finals, again losing to Phil Taylor.
  • In 2007, he finished 5th in the league stage.

After 2007, his ranking dropped, and he was no longer invited to the Premier League.

Personal Life

Colin Lloyd has diabetes. In 2020, he started a fitness plan and lost a lot of weight, showing his dedication to staying healthy.
