History of Colmesneil
The town of Colmesneil got its name from W. T. Colmesneil. He was one of the first conductors on the Texas and New Orleans Railroad. This railroad line ran right through the county.
In 1881, a railroad line was built from Colmesneil to Trinity. This made Colmesneil a very important place for shipping goods in the county. Because of the hilly land, the main things sold were timber (wood) and cattle. For a while in the 1880s, a company called Yellow Pine Lumber Company had a large wood mill here. At one point, Colmesneil even had more people living there than Beaumont!
The name Colmesneil might be a slightly changed spelling of Colmesnil. This is a very old name from a part of France called Normandy. It means "Koli′s rural estate," referring to a farm or land owned by a Scandinavian settler named Koli.
