Concord Mall is a big shopping center located just north of Wilmington. It's in an area called Brandywine Hundred along a road named U.S. Route 202. This mall is the second largest in Delaware!

Because it's close to the Pennsylvania border, many people from Pennsylvania and other nearby states come to shop here. Why? Because Delaware has tax-free shopping, which means you don't pay extra sales tax on most things you buy!

The mall has over 90 stores. It also features a cool fountain surrounded by a garden. Namdar Realty Group owns the mall. You'll find big department stores like Macy's, Macy's Home, and Boscov's here.

Where is Concord Mall Located?

Concord Mall is in northern New Castle County, Delaware. It's just north of Wilmington. The mall is also very close to the Pennsylvania border.

You can find it along U.S. Route 202, also known as Concord Pike. This road has many businesses between Wilmington and Pennsylvania. The mall is just south of where US 202 meets Delaware Route 92 (Naamans Road).

If you want to get there by public transport, DART First State bus routes 2 and 61 stop at the mall. These buses can take you to Wilmington or Claymont.

A Look Back: History of Concord Mall

Concord Mall didn't open all at once. It grew in stages over several years.

  • 1965: The first store, an Almart (a discount store that doesn't exist anymore), opened its doors.
  • 1968: The main part of the mall officially opened.
  • 1971: A department store called Pomeroy's was added.
  • 1983: Strawbridge & Clothier, another big department store, moved into the mall.
  • 1984: The Almart store changed into a Jefferson Ward, and later became a Bradlees for a short time.
  • 1986: Pomeroy's closed, and Boscov's took its place.
  • 1992: The old Almart/Jefferson Ward/Bradlees building was torn down. A new Sears store opened in its spot.
  • 1994: Strawbridge & Clothier Home Furnishings opened. The mall also got a big makeover this year.
  • 1998: Allied Properties bought Concord Mall.
  • 2006: Strawbridge's and Strawbridge's Home Furnishings became Macy's and Macy's Home. This happened after Federated Department Stores bought the company that owned Strawbridge's.

In recent years, the mall has faced some challenges, like other shopping malls. In 2020, Namdar Realty Group, a company that helps malls, bought Concord Mall. Sadly, the Sears store, which was the last one in Delaware, closed in April 2020.
