Condamine is a small country town in the Western Downs Region of Queensland, Australia. It is also the name of the area around the town. In 2021 census, about 294 people lived in Condamine.

Condamine is famous for being the place where the "Condamine Bell" was invented. This was a special bell made from metal. Farmers used it to help find their herds of cattle.

Where is Condamine?

Condamine is located in the middle of the Western Downs Region. It is about 333 kilometres (207 miles) north-west of Brisbane, which is the capital city of Queensland. The town of Miles is about 34 kilometres (21 miles) north of Condamine.

The Leichhardt Highway goes right through the town, running from north to south. Another road, the Roma-Condamine Road, comes into the area from the west. The Condamine River flows past the western side of the town.

A Look at Condamine's Past

The area around Condamine has a long history. The first post office in the area opened on May 21, 1856. It was first called Tieryboo Post Office. Later that same year, in July, its name was changed to Condamine.

Condamine State School, which is the local primary school, opened its doors on January 1, 1863. This makes it one of the oldest state primary schools in Queensland.

In December 2010 and January 2011, Condamine faced big floods. The Condamine River rose very high. People had to leave their homes for safety. The town was evacuated twice in just 10 days during January 2011 because of heavy rain.
