Cone is a small community in Crosby County, Texas, in the United States. It's called an "unincorporated community" because it doesn't have its own local government like a city does. In 2000, about 70 people lived there. Cone is also part of the larger area around Lubbock.

History of Cone, Texas

Cone was started in 1901. It was named after an early settler, James Stanton Cone. A post office opened there just two years later. James S. Cone worked as a mail carrier. He brought mail from a nearby town called Emma. The first post office was inside R.E. Chapman's general store. Mr. Chapman also became the first postmaster.

Growth and Decline of Cone

In 1939, about 150 people lived in Cone. After that, the number of people living there started to go down. By 1988, only 50 residents lived in the community. They had three businesses and the post office. The population went up a bit to 70 people in 2000. For some time, Cone also had stores and churches.

Cone Today

Today, Cone is an important place for shipping farm products. These include cotton, sorghum, grains, and wheat. There is also a cemetery in Cone.

Natural Events in Cone

On May 24, 1957, a strong F3 tornado passed near Cone. It caused damage in other areas before it ended east of the community.

Where is Cone Located?

Cone is found where two roads meet: U.S. Route 62 and Farm to Market Road 193. It is about 19 miles (31 km) northwest of Crosbyton. It is also 34 miles (55 km) northeast of Lubbock. Other nearby towns include Ralls, Floydada, and Plainview.

Education in Cone

A man known as "Uncle" Charlie Travis gave land for a school. The Cone School District was created on February 14, 1905. Later, in 1965, the school district joined the Ralls Independent School District. Cone was also home to a special place called Harmony Plains Singing school.
