Conus generalis 2
A Conus generalis snail shell.

The Conus generalis, often called the general cone, is a fascinating type of sea snail. It's a marine gastropod mollusk, which means it's a snail that lives in the ocean. These snails belong to the family Conidae, also known as the cone snails.

These snails are predatory, meaning they hunt other small creatures for food. They are also venomous, which means they can deliver a sting. Because of their venom, it's very important to be careful around live cone snails. It's best not to touch them at all to stay safe.

What Does the General Cone Snail Look Like?

The shell of an adult general cone snail can be anywhere from about 4.5 centimeters (1.8 inches) to 10.5 centimeters (4.1 inches) long. It's a thick and wide shell. The top part, called the spire, is quite flat. It has a small, pointed tip, known as the apex, that sticks up.

The shell's color can range from orange-brown to a rich chocolate color. It often has white bands that are not perfectly straight. These bands usually appear around the shoulder, in the middle, and at the bottom of the shell. Over these white bands, you might see zigzag or uneven chocolate-colored patterns. The opening of the shell, called the aperture, is white.

Where Do General Cone Snails Live?

You can find the general cone snail in many shallow ocean areas around the world. They prefer different types of sandy or rocky bottoms.

They live in the Red Sea and in parts of the Indian Ocean. This includes areas near Madagascar, Mauritius, and Tanzania. You can also find them in the Indo-West Pacific region, which covers places like Indonesia and the Philippines. Their habitat stretches from Northwest Australia all the way to French Polynesia and the Ryukyu Islands in Japan. They are also found in the Central Indian Ocean, for example, around the Maldives.
