Copping was officially recognized as a "locality" (a specific type of place) in 1968. This means it was given its official name and boundaries on maps.

How Copping Got Its Name

Copping is part of the larger Bream Creek district. The area was named after a person named Captain Richard Copping. In 1860, Captain Copping bought some land here from George Moore. He then allowed three of his half-brothers to live and work on this land as tenant farmers. This means they farmed the land and paid rent to Captain Copping. Captain Copping himself lived nearby at a property he owned called Rochford Hall in Kellevie.

Copping's Post Office Days

For many years, Copping had its own post office. The Copping Post Office first opened its doors on October 1, 1886. It served the community for over a century before closing down in 1988.
