History of Dunalley

Dunalley became an official place name in 1967. Before that, it was called East Bay Neck. The name Dunalley comes from Henry Prittie, 3rd Baron Dunalley, who lived in Ireland.

The Denison Canal

A special waterway called the Denison Canal is in Dunalley. It connects Dunalley Bay and Blackman Bay. This canal makes it easier for boats to travel between the two bays. It also has a swing bridge for cars to cross.

The canal project started in 1901 and was finished in 1905. Workers first dug it by hand. In 1965, a new, modern bridge was built. Boats in the Sydney–Hobart often use this canal. It's a handy shortcut when they return to Sydney.
