Crellin is a small community in Garrett County, Maryland, in the United States. It is known as a census-designated place (CDP). This means it's an area that the U.S. Census Bureau defines for gathering population data. In 2020, about 210 people lived in Crellin.

History of Crellin

Crellin was built as a "company town." This means a company created the town to support its business. In the early 1900s, Crellin was a busy place. It had large coal mining and lumber operations.

The Preston Railroad was also based in Crellin. This railroad was named after Preston County, West Virginia. It often crossed into West Virginia on its routes. The Preston Railroad stopped running in the late 1950s. Today, very little is left to show that these big mining, lumber, and railroad businesses were once here.

Where is Crellin?

Crellin is located in the western part of Garrett County. It is only about 1 mile (1.6 km) east of the border with West Virginia. The community sits in the valley of the Youghiogheny River. It is built into a curve of Snowy Creek, right where Snowy Creek joins the Youghiogheny River.

Maryland Route 39 (also called Hutton Road) runs through Crellin. If you go east on Route 39 for about 4 miles (6.4 km), you will reach Oakland. Oakland is the county seat of Garrett County. If you go northwest on Route 39 for about 3 miles (4.8 km), you will arrive in Corinth, West Virginia.

The Crellin census-designated place covers an area of about 0.70 square miles (1.82 square kilometers). All of this area is land.
