Cristina Goettsch Mittermeier (born November 26, 1966, in Mexico City, Mexico) is a Mexican photographer, conservationist, and biologist. She is also an author.
Cristina Mittermeier is a marine biologist and activist. She helped create the idea of conservation photography. This means using photos to protect nature. Her pictures show how people, especially indigenous people (native communities), are connected to nature. They also show how the ocean and climate change affect our planet.

Education and Learning
Cristina Mittermeier went to the Instituto Tecnologico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey (ITESM). She earned a degree in marine biology in 1989.
Later, from 1996 to 1999, she studied at the Corcoran College for the Arts. There, she earned a photography associate degree.
Her Work and Career
Early Work (1990-1991)
Cristina started her career at Conservation International Mexico. She worked on projects in places like the Gulf of California. During this time, she realized how important protecting nature was. She also got her first camera. Before becoming a professional photographer, she worked outdoors. She studied marine mammals, fisheries, and how to protect different kinds of plants and animals.
Starting ILCP (2005-2010)
In 2005, Cristina Mittermeier founded the International League of Conservation Photographers (ILCP). This is a group of photographers from all over the world. Their goal is to use amazing photos to help protect the environment. Cristina was the founder and president until 2010.
Helping the Wild Foundation (2006-Present)
Cristina is part of the leadership team for the WILD Foundation. This group works to protect wild places around the world.
Cemex Conservation Books (2007-Present)
Cristina helps create the Cemex Conservation book series. These books show different ways to protect our natural world. They include powerful images from top photographers.
Co-founding SeaLegacy (2014-Present)
With her partner, Paul Nicklen, Cristina co-founded SeaLegacy in 2014. She is the president of this organization. SeaLegacy works with filmmakers and photographers. Their mission is to use art, science, and communication to protect and help the ocean become wild and healthy again. They want to do this within our lifetimes.
Her Life
Cristina Mittermeier has two children with her former husband, Russell Mittermeier. Their names are Michael (born 1992) and Juliana (born 1996). She also has a stepson, John (born 1985).
Cristina married Russell Mittermeier in 1991. They moved to Great Falls, Virginia. They wrote several books together. They divorced in 2008 but stayed friends. They still work together on many conservation projects, like the CEMEX book series.
In 2010, Cristina met Paul Nicklen. They both loved photography, the ocean, and protecting nature. They have been partners since 2012. They live on Vancouver Island, British Columbia.
