Cristóvão Borges dos Santos (born June 9, 1959) is a Brazilian football coach and former player. He played as a midfielder, which is a player who helps both in defense and attack. Cristóvão has had a long career in football, both on the field and on the sidelines as a coach.

Playing Career: A Midfielder's Journey

Cristóvão was born in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil. He started his football journey at Bahia. During his playing days, he played for many famous Brazilian clubs. These included Fluminense, Atlético Paranaense, Corinthians, and Grêmio.

Club Successes as a Player

Cristóvão won several important titles with his clubs. He helped Fluminense win the Campeonato Carioca in 1980. With Atlético Paranaense, he won the Campeonato Paranaense twice. He also achieved success with Grêmio, winning the Campeonato Gaúcho three times and the Copa do Brasil in 1989. He retired from playing in 1994.

Representing Brazil

Cristóvão also played for the Brazilian national team. He played seven games for his country in 1989. During these matches, he scored three goals. He was part of the team that won the 1989 Copa América, a major football tournament in South America.

Coaching Career: From Assistant to Head Coach

After ending his playing career, Cristóvão became a coach. He started as an assistant coach in 1998 with Bangu. He then worked with famous coach Ricardo Gomes for almost ten years. They worked together at clubs like Sport Recife and the Brazil U23 team.

First Head Coach Role at Vasco da Gama

In 2011, Cristóvão joined Vasco da Gama as an assistant coach. Later that year, the head coach, Ricardo Gomes, became unwell. Cristóvão stepped up to become the main coach. He did a great job, leading Vasco to the semifinals of the Copa Sudamericana. He also guided them to a strong second-place finish in the Brazilian League that year.

Managing Other Top Teams

After his time at Vasco, Cristóvão managed several other big Brazilian clubs. He coached his former club Bahia in 2013. He also led Fluminense, Flamengo, and Atlético Paranaense. In 2016, he took over as coach of Corinthians. He had a second period as coach of Vasco da Gama in 2017. More recently, he coached Atlético Goianiense in 2020 and Figueirense in 2023.
