History of Cuba

Cuba was planned out in 1857. This happened when people knew a railroad would be built there. The city was named after the island of Cuba.

Famous Visitors and Murals

President Harry S. Truman visited Cuba a long time ago. He was touring along U.S. Route 66. He looked at the land that later became Indian Hills Lake. This lake was first called "Indian Head Lake." This was because an old Native American artifact was found during digging.

Two other famous people, Bette Davis and Amelia Earhart, also visited Cuba. Their visits are remembered with special murals. These murals are part of the Viva Cuba Mural Project.

Route 66 Mural City

The state of Missouri officially called Cuba the "Route 66 Mural City." This was to honor the Viva Cuba's Outdoor Mural Project. A group that helps make the city beautiful worked with a Canadian artist named Michelle Loughery. She helped create the idea for the murals. The group then asked artists to paint twelve large murals along the old Route 66 road. Today, a big highway called Interstate 44 also goes through Cuba.

Cuba was also the first place in Missouri to start the Adopt a Highway program. This program helps keep roads clean.

Historic Buildings

Several old buildings in Cuba are very important. They are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. These include the Cuba City Jail, the Cuba High School Annex, and the Wagon Wheel Motel, Cafe and Station. These places help tell the story of Cuba's past.
