Culloden is a small city in the state of Georgia, USA. It is located in Monroe County, Georgia. In 2020, about 200 people lived there. Culloden is part of the larger Macon area.

History of Culloden

Culloden was first settled around the year 1739. The community got its name from William Culloden, who was a local merchant. The city has had a post office since 1825, which is a very long time!

In 1887, the Georgia General Assembly officially made Culloden a city. Its city limits stretched out one mile in every direction from the town's main well.

Geography and Location

Culloden is located in the southwestern part of Monroe County, Georgia. You can find it at these coordinates: 32°51′47″N 84°5′37″W / 32.86306°N 84.09361°W / 32.86306; -84.09361.

The city is near two important roads: U.S. Route 341 and Georgia State Route 74. U.S. 341 goes north and south just east of the city. It leads north about 15 miles to Barnesville and south about 12 miles to Roberta. Georgia State Route 74 goes west and east to the north of Culloden. It leads east about 32 miles to Macon and west about 17 miles to Thomaston.

Culloden is a small city, covering about 0.8 square miles (2.06 square kilometers). Most of this area is land, with a tiny bit of water.

Continental Divide in Culloden

An interesting fact about Culloden is that it sits on the Eastern Continental Divide. This is like an invisible line that separates where water flows. On the west side of Culloden, water flows southwest towards the Gulf of Mexico. This water eventually reaches the Flint River.

On the east side of Culloden, water flows southeast towards the Atlantic Ocean. This water eventually reaches the Ocmulgee River. So, the city is right on the edge of two different major river systems!

Population and People

The population of Culloden has changed over the years. In 1880, there were 381 people living there. The population went up and down for many years.

In 2010, about 175 people lived in Culloden. By 2020, the population grew slightly to 200 people.

Most of the people in Culloden are either White or Black or African American. In 2020, about 48.5% of the people were White, and about 45.5% were Black or African American. A small number of people identified as being of mixed race or Hispanic/Latino.

Notable Person from Culloden

  • Alfred Blalock: He was a famous surgeon who was born near Culloden. He helped develop a special surgery called the Blalock–Taussig shunt. This surgery helped babies with a serious heart problem called Tetralogy of Fallot. His work was very important for modern heart surgery.
