Cup Noodles (カップヌードル, Kappu Nūdoru) is a super popular brand of instant noodles. These noodles come in a handy cup. You just add hot water, and they're ready to eat!

Nissin Foods, a Japanese company, created Cup Noodles in 1971. They are sold in foam, plastic, or paper cups. The original name in some places was "Cup O' Noodles." In Japan, it's often called "Cup Noodle" (singular). This tasty and easy meal has inspired many other similar products around the world.

The Story of Cup Noodles

How Instant Noodles Began

The idea for instant noodles came from Momofuku Ando in 1958. He was the founder of Nissin Foods, a Japanese company. His first instant noodles were called "Chickin Ramen." They were the very first instant ramen noodles ever made!

Coming to America

In 1970, Nissin Foods started a branch in the United States. They wanted to sell their instant noodles there. They realized that people in the US didn't often use bowls for noodles like in Asia. So, a special paper cup was designed for them.

In 1971, Nissin introduced instant ramen in a foam cup. The first flavors in the US were beef, chicken, and shrimp. Pork flavor was added a few years later in 1976.

Today, instant noodles in Japan often come in foam bowls. These bowls are cheap, easy to throw away, and light. They also keep the noodles warm because they insulate heat well.

You can find many different flavors of Cup Noodles around the world. For example, there's tom yum in Thailand and curry in Japan. You might find crab flavor in Hong Kong or churrasco in Brazil.

In 2016, the Cup Noodles sold in the US were changed. They now have less salt. Also, they no longer contain MSG or artificial flavors. This makes them a bit healthier.
