Cup Noodles (カップヌードル, Kappu Nūdoru) is a super popular brand of instant ramen (noodles in a cup). It was first made in 1971 by a Japanese food company called Nissin Foods.
These noodles come in single servings inside foam, plastic, or paper cups. All you need to do is add boiling water, wait a few minutes, and then you can enjoy them! The name Cup Noodle is a special trademark of Nissin Foods. In some places, like Japan, people just say "Cup Noodle." This product has inspired many other companies to make their own cup noodles.
How Cup Noodles Started
Instant noodles were invented in 1958 by a person named Momofuku Ando. He was the founder of the Japanese food company Nissin Foods. His first instant ramen was called Chicken Ramen.
In 1970, Nissin Foods started a branch in the United States. They wanted to sell instant noodles there. They noticed that Americans didn't often use the same bowls for noodles as people in Asia.
So, a special paper cup was designed for the noodles. In 1971, Nissin introduced instant ramen in a foam cup. The first flavors in the U.S. were beef, chicken, and shrimp. A pork flavor was added in 1976.
For a long time, the product was known as Cup O' Noodles in the United States. This name changed to Cup Noodles in 1993. Since 1992, Japan Airlines has even offered a special "de Sky" flavor of Cup Noodle on their flights!
Cup Noodles Today
Today, instant noodles in Japan often come in foam bowls. These bowls are cheap, easy to throw away, and light. They also keep the noodles warm because they insulate heat well.
You can find many different flavors of Cup Noodles all around the world. For example, there's tom yum flavor in Thailand and curry flavor in Japan. In Hong Kong, you might find crab flavor, and in Brazil, there's a churrasco (barbecue) flavor.
In 2016, the Cup Noodles sold in the U.S. were changed. They now have less sodium (salt). Also, they no longer contain MSG or artificial flavors.
