Parent Nissin Foods Holdings

Nissin Foods Holdings Co., Ltd. (日清食品ホールディングス株式会社, Nisshin Shokuhin Hōrudingusu kabushiki gaisha) is a Japanese food company. It was started in 1948 by Momofuku Ando in Izumiōtsu, Osaka, Japan.

Nissin Foods owns several other companies like Nissin Food Products and Myojo Foods. It is famous for creating the world's first instant noodles, called Chicken Ramen. They also make other popular instant noodle products, such as Cup Noodles, Yakisoba U.F.O., and Demae Ramen.

History of Nissin Foods

How the Company Started

The company began in Japan on September 1, 1948. It was founded by a Taiwanese-Japanese inventor named Go Pek-Hok, also known as Momofuku Ando. He first named his company Chuko Sosha.

Ten years later, in 1958, the company introduced its first instant ramen noodle product. It was called Chikin Ramen, which means Chicken Ramen. Soon after, the company changed its name to Nissin Food Products Co., Ltd.

Nissin Foods started a branch in the United States in 1970. They began selling instant ramen noodles there under the name Top Ramen in 1972. Both Nissin Chikin Ramen (1958) and Cup Noodles (1971) were invented by Momofuku Ando. Nissin Foods' main office is in Yodogawa-ku, Osaka.

Recent Company Growth

The company moved to its current main office building in 1977. This was after the building's construction was finished.

In 2007, Myojo Foods Co., Ltd. became a full part of Nissin Foods. On January 5, 2007, Momofuku Ando, the founder of Nissin, passed away at 96 years old.

In May 2011, Nissin announced a partnership with a snack company called Frente Co., Ltd. In September 2011, the Cup Noodles museum opened in Yokohama. This museum shows all about Momofuku Ando's ideas and inventions.

Nissin also made a deal with a large Turkish company in September 2013. This led to the creation of Nissin Yildiz Gida Sanayi ve Ticaret A.S.

In March 2014, Nissin opened The Wave, a new research and development (R&D) center in Japan. This center aims to create "a wave of the most advanced food technologies." The building has even won the Good Design Award.

By 2016, people around the world had bought 40 billion servings of Cup Noodles. About 70% of these sales happened outside of Japan.

What Does the Name "Nissin" Mean?

The company says that the name 'Nissin' comes from a Japanese phrase. The phrase is 「日々清らかに豊かな味をつくる」 (Hibi kiyoraka ni yutakana aji o tsukuru).

Momofuku Ando, the company's founder, created this phrase. It shows his wish for the company. The phrase roughly means "Day after day purely create great taste."
