History of Nissin Foods
How Nissin Foods Started
Nissin Foods began in Japan on September 1, 1948. It was founded by a man named Go Pek-Hok, who later became known as Momofuku Ando. His first company was called Chuko Sosha.
Ten years later, in 1958, the company launched its first instant ramen noodle product. It was called Chikin Ramen (Chicken Ramen). This was a huge step for easy-to-make food. Soon after, the company changed its name to Nissin Food Products Co., Ltd.
Nissin's Growth and New Products
In 1970, Nissin Foods started a branch in the United States. They began selling instant ramen noodles there under the name Top Ramen in 1972.
Momofuku Ando, the founder, invented both Nissin Chikin Ramen in 1958 and Cup Noodles in 1971. These inventions changed how people around the world eat quick meals. Nissin Foods has its main office in Yodogawa-ku, Osaka.
Recent Years and Global Reach
Nissin Foods moved to its current main office building in 1977. In 2007, another food company, Myojo Foods Co., Ltd., became part of Nissin Foods. Sadly, Momofuku Ando, the founder, passed away in 2007 at the age of 96.
In 2011, Nissin opened the Cup Noodles Museum in Yokohama, Japan. This museum shows the amazing ideas of Momofuku Ando. It's a fun place to learn about the history of instant noodles.
Nissin Foods has continued to grow worldwide. By 2016, over 40 billion servings of Cup Noodles had been sold around the globe. A large part of these sales, about 70%, were outside Japan.
What Does 'Nissin' Mean?
The name 'Nissin' comes from a Japanese phrase. The founder, Momofuku Ando, created the phrase 「日々清らかに豊かな味をつくる」 (Hibi kiyoraka ni yutakana aji o tsukuru). This means "Day after day purely create great taste." The name 'Nissin' is a shorter way to say this important idea.
