Cushing is a small place in Minnesota, United States. It's not a city or town, but an unincorporated community. This means it doesn't have its own local government like a city does. Cushing is located in Cushing Township, which is part of Morrison County.

You can find Cushing along a main road called U.S. Highway 10. It's also near Morrison County Road 5 and Bear Road. Some nearby communities include Randall, Little Falls, and Motley.

What is Cushing Like?

Even though it's a small community, Cushing has some important places. You'll find a post office there, where people send and receive mail. There's also a park for outdoor fun and a local bar. The community has one church for its residents.

The building where the local government for Cushing Township meets, called the town hall, is also located right in Cushing. A big train track, used by the BNSF Railway, goes right through the community.

A Look Back: Cushing's History

Cushing was officially planned out and marked on a map in 1907. This process is called "platting." It means they laid out the streets and property lines.

Historians believe the community was named after a person named Caleb Cushing. He was a well-known politician from Massachusetts.

Fun Around Lake Alexander

One of the most popular spots near Cushing is Lake Alexander. It's a beautiful lake that many people enjoy.

In the past, especially from the 1950s to the 1990s, Lake Alexander was a popular vacation spot. Several resorts were located there, like the Silver Moon, Ray's Resort, and The Shady Inn. These places offered summer campgrounds and cabins for rent.

A local favorite was The Blue Front Resort. It offered places for overnight and seasonal camping. It also had four cabins, a store, and a bar with a jukebox, pool table, and pinball machines. Over time, all these resorts have closed to the public.

Getting Around: Transportation

If you're looking for train travel, the Amtrak Empire Builder train passes through Cushing. This train travels between Seattle or Portland and Chicago.

However, the train does not stop in Cushing. It just passes by on the BNSF tracks. The closest place to catch the train is in Staples. Staples is about 23 miles (37 km) northwest of Cushing.
