A Look Back in Time
Dagsboro became an official town in the early 1900s. It gets busy in the summer because of traffic heading to the beaches. The town was founded in 1747. It was once known by other names like Blackfoot Town and Dagsbury.
The town was named after John Dagworthy (1721–1784). He was a brigadier general in the local militia during the American Revolutionary War.

Getting Around Dagsboro
Most people travel to and from Dagsboro by car. Three main state highways serve the town. U.S. Route 113 is the most important road. It runs along the west side of town, going north and south. This road connects Dagsboro to Georgetown to the north and Maryland to the south.
Delaware Route 20 and Delaware Route 26 also pass through the town. They meet on Main Street in the center of Dagsboro. Route 20 goes west-northwest to east-southeast. Route 26 goes more directly east-west. Both roads lead to the coast. Route 20 goes towards Fenwick Island, and Route 26 goes to Bethany Beach.
A train line, the Delmarva Central Railroad's Dagsboro Industrial Track, also runs through Dagsboro.

Important Places in Dagsboro
Prince George's Chapel
Prince George's Chapel was built in 1755. It was named after Prince George, who later became King George III. This chapel is one of the oldest churches in the United States. It is also one of the oldest buildings in Dagsboro.
General Dagworthy, who the town is named after, is buried in the chapel's cemetery. The State of Delaware bought the property in 1967. It was listed as a historic place in 1971.
Clayton Theatre
The Clayton Theatre opened in Dagsboro on February 2, 1949. It first showed the movie One Touch of Venus. The theater was named after John M. Clayton. He was a former United States senator and Secretary of State.
In the 1950s, a soda fountain called Clayton Cut Rate Luncheonette was next to the theater. Today, the Clayton Theatre uses modern digital equipment. It is still Delaware's last single-screen movie theater.
Delaware Botanic Gardens
Dagsboro is also home to a new botanic garden. It is called the Delaware Botanic Gardens. This garden features a special meadow designed by famous garden designer Piet Oudolf. The gardens opened to the public in 2020.
